OP_Return was never supposed to be sexy. Just a little slot for extra data in a Bitcoin transaction. Harmless. Neat. Useful for a timestamp here or a proof there. Then people started pushing it. Bigger payloads. Weird experiments. NFTs before NFTs were a thing. Suddenly this quiet corner of Bitcoin became a tug-of-war.  

One camp says loosen the rules. Let nodes handle it. With Compact Blocks and caching the performance hit is tiny. If you run a node for yourself why should you care what others do. You paid for the hardware. You pay for the bandwidth. Your rules your node.
