Teaching kids how to develop their writing muscles is no mean feat because the weaker ones find it hard to string a sentence together. Not to mention that most of them find writing a chore, given the prevalence of digital devices. Thank goodness for Sensei. He knows how to wrap a catchy mnemonic around a difficult concept:
Hand Foot Mouth Disease
What does this stand for in the context of writing an ending? Without further ado, let me reveal it:
Hope Feeling Memory Decision
As long as students have included some of the above elements and stated how they have experienced personal growth as a result, they would have ended their story with a flourish. Landing mighty punches on the reader’s consciousness.
Let me share some examples I have written for my students before.
The ambulance soon arrived at the scene. The paramedics lifted him on a stretcher. The ambulance then left for the hospital. Cody was relieved that the man would get medical attention. He hoped that the man would recover soon.
The lady returned the man his wallet. The man was shocked that he had dropped his wallet. He thanked her profusely. He was grateful that he had met a kind person.
In the end, Mary had to face the music. Mary’s face turned red with shame as she showed her mother her mark. Her mother put her hands on her hips furiously and scolded her harshly. Mary learnt an important lesson to prepare herself properly for examinations and not sleep late again.
In the end, the passer-by scolded Tom and Jerry harshly. His face turned as black as thunder. Tom and Jerry knew that they were in hot water. Their heads hung low, they apologized profusely to him. They learnt an important lesson to not run around and misbehave in the supermarket again.
In the end, the teacher took Tom and Jerry over to the librarian. The librarian’s face turned as black as thunder. She pointed her finger angrily as she chided them. Tom and Jerry were deeply ashamed. They apologized profusely and promised never to vandalize books again.
I know it’s formulaic and bland writing, but a desperate teacher has got to do what he needs to do!
