This is a fairly negative take, but perhaps clear-eyed nonetheless. Being able to get something done quickly and easily is one hell of a drug.
I've always thought that what the Matrix got wrong was that the machines had to force the people into plugging in and becoming batteries.
I think more likely in the future, people will voluntarily give up all autonomy and actually pay to plug in to the matrix.
I even coined a term for it, "LaaS: Life as a Service".
