Exactly! This is the point of terrorism. Even people with security are either very exposed very often or they're extremely restricted in where they go.
I know enough military guys that would agree with me on this. Most security is more of a deterrent that a bullet proof shield.
I think the Trump assassination attempt probably opened a lot of eyes as to how its not that hard with modern tools and weak security. I suspect we will see more copy-cats.
Same with schools. I have said this so much in private conversations that I don't even do so here. School violence could be stopped but we don't wanna spend the money. All the gun control doesn't matter. Its fools that have no clue pushing for that or cynical political actors. Police stations do not get shot up. Why? Because they are full of armed men.
But we would rather pretend that reality doesn't exist and live in fair land where gun rules will protect us from evil.
I have heard that many politicians are now asking for more security. I hate to say it but I think we will see more of this until it can be shown to be stopped. We saw this in the 60s and 70s and into the 80s. It happens in other countries. I hope we don't see a right wing shooter do something similar. I pray we don't see any more of this but I am not that hopeful.

It's part of a larger trend of moving towards a low-trust society. If you think about how vulnerable you are most of the time, you realize what keeps you safe is that almost no one wants to commit violent acts.
Society would grind to a halt if we had to actually take meaningful security measures throughout our days.

Bingo. But we are propagandized and have been for decades now about how unsafe we are. There's a reason. Power. Fear is how you gain power.
Its done by both sides too. And its going to led to tyranny. I immediately thought this after Kirk was shot.
Its like this person or people are trying to create what they claim to fear. Are they trying to push Trump into being an even more of strong man type figure? Are they trying to guarantee that his successor is even more heavy handed?
Trump isn't an ideologue. He's none of the names they call him. He's a dude that wants to do stuff and doesn't care about your politics. But, because of this he can be dangerous. What is more dangerous is how many people I see rejecting the idea that we should limit the state. People cheering on imprisonment without a fair trial. People cheering on violent action because they believe they have been wronged.
Its not good. I have been concerned about this stuff for at least 10 years now and it seems to be speeding up. Its why I'm in favor of national peaceful divorce. The alternative is civil war. I was saying this to friends in 2016 and they laughed. I was saying this in 2020 and they laughed less. I was saying this in 2024 and they laughed like 2020 didn't happen. I don't even want to say it any more. I see it happening already.

The way DC is responding, it's pretty clear there are strong influences that want more control over security, speech, organizing, etc.

This aligns with the movements already in play around Internet speech.
No matter the problem. The solution is always more statism. More authoritarianism. Doesn't matter who is in power. That's what we get.
Internet IDs are close. Nostr and Bitcoin are gonna be more important than ever.
