I am very much not doing it right yet. As I have not made it so my main wallet is connected to my own node so I am still using other's nodes there. But after a long ass sync, I am finally running Bitcoin core and validating transactions.
This all has been a huge process for me, and I will continue to build on what I've managed to figure out through research and trial and error. I know others are doing far more productive things than I've managed, but I am trying at my own pace.
Thanks all in this wonderful community for being open, helpful and sharing information with others. I have much to learn, and I'm not sure I'll ever reach a place I feel is necessary, but dammit if I won't try a little at a time.

I may not be where I should yet but seeing the number of transactions in the mempool and all the connections in the peers tab makes me tangibly feel part of something bigger than me.

Any interaction with Bitcoin is interacting with something bigger than one's self.
That means, buying Bitcoin, holding Bitcoin, and talking about Bitcoin to nocoiners and precoiners alike.

I very much agree. The last couple years have been a beautiful changing of the way I view the world. I have Bitcoin to thank for that. And Bitcoiners for writing guides, discussing philosophy, producing content, and building places like this to ask for guidance and share ideas along the way.
Cheers!

Now just make sure to only buy BTC. Don't get fooled into buying any other type of crypto. Bitcoin only.

Oh been there done that. BTC is my boomstick. And it's groovy.

A great feeling i had: linked my bitcoincore to sparrow wallet. Bought a hat from bitcoinhatguy...broadcasted the xaction from via my node and sparrow...then watched the transaction go into the mempool and get confirmed. Pretty wild feeling to xfer value between me and another person with no one in between.

This is currently what I'm messing with. I'm having trouble getting Sparrow to connect to Bitcoin core though. I'm assuming it has to do with saving everything on an external hard drive and something to do with the .conf file. I'll have to mess around some more. But ideally I'll get that connected then be able to get my hardware wallet connected to sparrow. It's a process.

Congratulations!
To connect your wallet, you'll most likely need an electrum server. You can use electrs for that

I managed to connect Sparrow wallet to it finally after messing with some stuff. Just received 5000 sats to it. Then sent my first transaction broadcast from my own node to my cold storage. Watched it pop up in the mempool in a few seconds. Mind blown. I just need to figure out how to connect my hardware wallet next but for now I'm pretty happy to have gotten this far.
