I'm seeing new gen "bitcoiners" embrace stablecoins and shitcoins in service of stablecoin smart contracts - and not get any flack for it because bitcoin's influencers are busy losing their minds in circular OP_RETURN debates or have given up on bitcoin altogether, rich, bored, and out of their depth, convinced they're on a "bitcoin-critical" side quest.

Then again, maybe this is one of those things that's good for bitcoin/humanity and I'm just so captured by maxi sentiment that I'm an idiot.

stablecoins are, at best, marginal improvements to humanity, and at worst outright scams

Sad

But what do you think bitcoin "needs" most right now?

reply

Lots of lightning improvements. If not that, some 10x better alternative to lightning.

All that's left to do in bitcoin are hard things which is why I think people are spending their time doing other things. So in that way, I don't blame them. But I resent folks that quit when they encountered an obstacle yet claim they've actually received some greater calling.[1]

  1. The Alone tv show features this vividly. Nearly everyone quits because they "don't need to win" or "care too much about the life they left for the competition." That may be true in some cases, but most of them quit because they were pushed beyond their limit and can't admit that to themselves.

There are many losers in capitalism. Without it, there's no progress. Time for a dip?

What would you say is the biggest improvement lightning needs?

I also agree that LN needs to improve. Either that, or the LN tools people are using needs to improve. I've had too many failed payments--it leaves a bad taste and makes LN seem unreliable. I remember that I couldn't pay Bitcoin Magazine once because payment kept failing (this was circa 2021). More recently, I tried to buy from hongbaob.tc via lightning, and that also failed. Bitrefill and Stacker.News have both been pretty reliable, but that may not be fair since I have a direct connection to SN.

  • payment reliability and better channel management are definitely big ones
  • better receiver privacy
  • async payments
  • PTLCs
  • better programmatic interop (that doesn't always require installing some wrapping service)

tbh I don't know exactly what it needs. I only know that it doesn't have what it needs yet.

The sadder part is all the people climbing the uphill battle get no support outside of their inner circle and slandered in crypto magazine.

But if you play ball you get all the support and profit. 🤷‍♂️
