The market for customer service software—incorporating traditional software-as-a-service (SaaS) products and new AI agents—could expand by an additional 20% to 45% by 2030, writes Gabriela Borges, who covers emerging software in Goldman Sachs Research, in the team’s report. That’s compared to a scenario without a generative AI boost.
“We believe agents will drive productivity, and software companies will capture a portion of this value,” Borges writes. Goldman Sachs Research estimates the application software market could grow to $780 billion by 2030, a 13% compound annual growth rate from this year.

Not really a fan of Goldman, but it's not much of a stretch that they're right about a 50/50 future split. If I were 15 years younger I'd be helping businesses run their own agents.

Yep, and honestly this has been a trend before this current AI hype train. Essentially this is piping different applications/services together. Interoperability is really what is going on. Now you just don't have to write as much glue code to get services to talk to each other.
Not sure how well this will pan out due to the actual costs of running these AI services vs. what they are currently charging but technically it makes sense.

But AI agents sounds a lot more sexy.
For decades we devs have been piping data all over the place. On our operating systems, commandlines, and across the Internet. The pattern I see repeat over and over again is making things easier and more approachable. We've seen it in the world of running servers for decades. We have seen in the mobile phone market. Now we are seeing it with APIs. Its all APIs. AI can't do these things without APIs. But APIs are not sexy anymore so the marketing is all about AI. AI is important but its not the only factor.
If you zoom out you can see the patterns.

So we get to burn ridiculous amounts of electricity because companies won't release a public API endpoint? 😆

LOL. Good luck

It's better. You get to pay Zuck so disgustingly much money for that, that Zuck will build a Manhattan-sized datacenter so you can let your cognitive decline go all the way to zero and never think again!

100% plenty of AI stuff is just the old stuff, that works well, with a thin layer of AI thrown in for marketing purposes!

Well, AI is more than hype. Its just not all of the hype and we will see how sustainable it is. I suspect it will be eventually. Agents are basically glue between systems. And they are responsive and flexible. One way to think about it is as a UI. The chatbot interface.
