There are keyboard shortcuts, but agree. Some buttons could be useful. Especially for making tables and more similar complex elements.

The approach is not yet final, but writing tools are probably going to be split in two parts.
The 1st is what you’re describing (I’m also imagining it being floaty), the 2nd part will be an attempt to introduce a non-overwhelming fully fledged editor
