I’m keen to run my own node to benefit from LN payments. Do I just follow the tried-and-tested route of buying a Raspberry Pi 4 and an Umbrel OS SD card from the Umbrel website (https://umbrel.com/) because it seems accessible for beginners like me or do I try it your way because it’s superior? TIA!

Running a node requires commitment, dedication, and funds. Start with Phoenix as @stackstacker says, read the guides from @darthcoin, and after hours of study, decide if that's what you want to do.

Just use Phoenix wallet. It's a non custodial lightning node on mobile.

Is that node always on draining moble battery, or only when you open a channel?

You don't need to worry about your phone's battery.

Go with something like Mynode or start9 if you want a little more control over the configuration of the node.
