What whirlpool were you looking at? You can get whirlpools with Sparrow or Samourai that only cost you ~10k sats, although that all depends on current fees for blockspace.
One practice that can be useful is to take some of the utxo's from the coinjoin and make a lightning channel with each. Might not always be useful to you, but it is an idea.
There is also the importance of avoiding address reuse and being careful about change addresses, but the article you linked goes over that in decent detail already.

I have thought about opening lightning channels, but I'm wondering if the connected lightning nodes will hate it if you keep closing channels on them.
