It sounds like for now they still need to have a bank account. I bet if they went to Bitcoin only (no crypto or fiat) they would get a lot more donations.

They just lie to virtue signal. Send them an email and explain you are trying to donate about 3 BTC - see if their story changes (I bet he will privately send you his bitcoin address).
