This is possibly a dumb question but I have notice many mempool tools don't seem to show any 0 sat/vb transactions anymore. I think I remember many tools in the past have a 0 - 1 sat/vb bucket.

Block 767538 and the surrounding blocks don't' seem to have any transactions below 1 sat/vb.

So dumb question is: Is this just random there where not 0 sat/vb transactions in the past few blocks and none in the mempool (we are in a low fee environment)? Or has something change where transactions with less than 1 sat/vb are no longer used?

Historically I feel there would usually be some 0 transactions out there for various reason. (cleaning up UTXO, moving to cold storage, etc..)

AFAIK you need to pay at least 1 sat/vb to be relayed and get mined by normal mempool policy. There's nothing in consensus code afaik preventing either mempools and miners from facilitating 0 sat/vb transactions - however it is a DOS vector.

reply

Bitcoin Core has a default of having minimum of 1 sat/vbyte to relay a transaction. So technically txs with lower fee rates could be mined but they are hard to get to miners because of the min relay settings.

reply

Miners don't have to accept 0 sat fees.

Miners are running a business. They don't work for free.

When miners used their old laptops to mine Bitcoin instead of Asics like today, they did it for the belief in Bitcoin and would do 0 sat confirmations.
