Can a newcomer justify the cost esp given most operate at a loss
I am really glad you asked this. It's becoming clear that I didn't express myself in the post as clearly as I should have. I hope I can clarify things:
  1. I am NOT suggesting that anyone go out and found a territory. That is costly and risky. Rather, I am suggesting that each territory covers a lot of ground. A stacker can pick out a topic within an existing territory and make it his/her own.
Example- my politics and law territory. Let's say you're a passionate libertarian, or communist, or whatever. Another example - beekeeping in Animal World. Start a regular blog/post writing about a topic you are intensely passionate about. I should have also emphasized that this won't work for people wanting to ass milk with some mindless AI bullshit. I would say you had a better shot of deceiving a general bitcoin pleb with that than trying to fool a bunch of beekeepers (example) about your expertise in beekeeping with AI crap. If you aren't passionate and obsessed with any hobby or interest, this isn't for you.
  1. You can attract new beekeepers to SN without it costing them anything. This is something I also failed to mention. If you read the SN FAQ, new stackers get a free cowboy post. You and the territory founder will then be able to zap the newbie some sats until they get their feet wet and learn about bitcoin.

I also wasn't clear (but this is a good follow-up regardless) - I have ideas for territories, but it's still thousands of dollars and haven't almost all of these territories lost money? It would be great if we could have a discounted rate for a few months or half a year to try to get traction and then you can either keep or ditch the territory
If I wanted to find, say, precious metals stackers (I've thought about this), it's a big risk to create the territory then bring people

Generally speaking, I don't think you can look at territories as a way to earn a profit in sats. It's really supporting the site's growth long term. In the future, who knows?

But if that's the rationale, then the entry is just too darn high. Like what's the highest subscription you pay for any online service? Or maybe Patreon because that's purely at will? If it's about site growth, it might make more sense to just allow for free territory creation but all proceeds go to @k00b and @ek.

I didn't mean to say territories can't be profitable. I think 6 or 7 are already, after about a year and a half, and without the tools we anticipated we would have by now. My point was, that without growing the site, the network is too small to expect profits yet.
