Fiction is fun, especially at the beginning of a story when you're unconstrained and it's arbitrary. It's really hard though after you've made enough choices and have to make it sing.
Pretty much what happened to Game of Thrones (the books), Lost (the TV show), and myriad other stories. The author comes up with a great setup but doesn't know how to tie it all up at the end. Usually because they didn't think they'd be as successful as they were.
