I'm not an expert in divorce law, but it really depends on where you live. That being said, I did not have one when I got married. Honestly it never even crossed my mind.

Two of my friends ended up in a bad divorce and almost financially ruin.

Oh, I'm not questioning your caution. Typically, assets acquired before marriage are separate property, but that's not legal advice. You really should do a search of law in your jurisdiction, but you have probably done that already.

There is ALWAYS a prenup. You just have to decide if you want that prenup written by the local government or if you want to discuss things ahead of time like adults.
That being said if neither party is bringing a significant disparity of resources to the marriage it probably doesn't make much sense.
