You see that @Undisciplined? India is there among the top ten when it comes to tourism share in its economy. However India is 39th when it comes to the number of foreign tourists visiting here. I think this huge difference attributes to Indians themselves do a lot of religious tourism + the foreigners also visit India for longer durations relatively.

India should be on par with China for tourism and I was shocked at how poorly China capitalizes on its tourist potential.
The model to follow is something like the Caribbean Islands. There are potentially lots of good jobs in catering to tourists. Plus, it incentivizes reducing crime, improving sanitation, preserving local culture, and English fluency, all of which benefit the locals.

Yes, India should be on par, however I personally think that China will be doing better in tourism than India for a long time because it's (more) beautiful, bigger, and most importantly lot of people travel there for busines purpose.
India is trying to do a lot in it but I believe we need more promotion on foreign lands.

India could try to capitalize on its huge advantage in English proficiency. It’s very difficult to navigate China without a guide if you don’t know Mandarin.
There’s also virtually no wildlife left in China, whereas India has fairly unique and exotic (from our perspective) animals and ecosystems.

Yes, you're right. Everything's just perfect here for tourism. We only need more promotion as I said.
However I've seen and heard that China also has many exotic and unique ecosystems but yeah they aren't as much varied as in India.

I’m sure China does but they’re very far from local work forces that are needed to support tourism.
As you’ve mentioned before, India has a more evenly distributed population.

Yes, most tourist attractions in China are very far from China's biggest cities. That's definitely a big minus for them.
The biggest plus for India's local tourism is its interrelation with religion. People from South of India travel to my location for Lord Krishna and end up visiting to other attractions including the Himalayas and other important locations. The people from North also travel to the South - to Rameshwaram - to see the God made bridge between India and Sri Lanka and they end up visiting other attractions as well.
There's a huge railway network - fourth in the world - in India that helps managing all this very cheaply. Can you believe if I tell you that a peeson from my place can travel to rameshwaram which is 2500 kms (approax 1500 miles) and it only costs around $25 in AC cabin one side.
India's tourism industry is thriving and growing at around 10%/year. This chart can explain more.

US has a backend policy ...
And because of it at most US consulates the waiting period for getting a normal tourist visa is more than a year. .
