Is it wrong to share a winter photograph during summer? For those of you in the Northern Hemisphere, does winter interest you at all right now? Noah Kalina has talked about how photographs have a period of interestingness that starts off high initially but fades rapidly, before its interestingness increases slowly with time over months and years. If I could find the graph he drew that illustrated this so well I would share it here, but all this to say I came across this photograph of one of my prints today and I found it… interesting.
Here we are surrounded by summer – so much summer everywhere with more to come – but this winter photograph I made in December 2024 really appeals to me. It’s definitely more interesting to me now than it was four or so months ago. Do I yearn for winter? Not at all. I couldn’t feel my fingers when I made this photograph. But there’s something to be said for the color palette of grays, blues and browns versus all of the green I am seeing right now (and not particularly enjoying). If any other photographers are struggling with summer greens, let’s talk about it.
If this print is interesting to you also, it can be yours. I have one printed and ready to go – it’s 11 × 14”, borderless, signed on the back, heavyweight luster photography paper (290gsm), free stuff included. Pay-what-you-want + shipping (Bitcoin-only)! Leave a comment or send us a message. -Tom
