What I’m saying is that you should choose hard work if hard work is the desired result.
the only area for me in which i can really see this working is that of exercise, but even then i think there is still something to be said for a more tempered approach since the body has to be allowed to recover after straining exertion. if im exercising with hard work being the desired result, then its probably stress relief that im actually seeking.
could you see hard work for hard work's sake being desirable?

I think she was mostly arguing against pursuing hard work for it own sake, but maybe still felt some need to allow for the hard work as a goal people.

yes that is true. my issue was with the phrasing. (that and i may have hastily/poorly parsed the main point at first.)
the point about going easy on oneself and others is one id agree with more broadly. everyone certainly has their crosses to bear and remove the beam out of your own eye before pointing out the sliver in someone else's, is how i learned it.
