It's too bad that restriction wasn't better considered. They needed to explicitly state something like "The Federal Government may only transact in fully backed gold or silver money."
Considering the people who wrote the Constitution lived through the Revolutionary period and its inflation and were not dummies, perhaps they thought that they had covered all the bases on that particular grotesquely. They couldn’t foresee what future ”jurists” on the SCOTUS would do when they claimed to be interpreting the living Constitution. They are probably spinning in their graves at this very moment and the current crop of idiots is not helping, either.

Naaahh….. they just got finished running out, hanging or shooting all of those willing to malevolently misconstrue what was written. Didn’t they also give Eldridge Gerry a lot of guff for war profiteering on the bonds and bills emitted during the war?
