I was living in Singapore as expatriate, and very recently relocated to Hong Kong. My observation totally agrees with yours, and the picture is consistent in both of these cities.

Which country do you prefer living in?

Between SG and HK? Solely in terms of life outside work, I would prefer SG any day. No language barrier, I could speak with the locals when in SG, in HK every communication outside office is a pain.
Food wise, Singapore is way more diverse, and you can find food from around the world, including western, more widely, at a much more reasonable cost.

What prompted the switch from SG to HK? If I understand things correctly, people are coming to SG from HK due to various factors, including quality of air, uncertain political climate etc

I agree, more people want to escape HK than coming in. For me though, I got a decent job offer from a hedge fund, something that I have been trying to get into for sometime, and they did not have a presence in SG as such, so thought I would take the plunge.
If my company had an office in SG, I would have preferred to stay.
