Bitchat is a messaging app that operates through Bluetooth mesh networks, allowing users to send messages without Wi-Fi or cell reception. Because of Bluetooth’s technical limitations, this kind of app generally only works at a range of around 100 meters, making it useful for situations like finding friends at a busy music festival where cell service is spotty. However, Dorsey claims that his app has an extended range, relaying messages through peers to extend up to 300 meters, or 984 feet.
Fun to watch Jack go wild with vibe coding.
It'd be cool if this eventually could get the messages to the internet, like what AirTag and FindMy do.

I want to read it as "Bit Chat" but my brain keeps pulling towards "Bitch at"
reply
Bitch At is a great name for a messaging app.

We already have things like Meshtastic, with much bigger range, separate devices and bridges to our phones. Why create something inferior?

Meshtatic requires specialized devices, bluetooth is available on every phone
reply
True, but...
  1. meshtastic devices ara cheap,
  2. bluetooth chips on phones are not equal, so diminished reliability,
  3. bluetooth signal is easily jammable,
  4. there's a tendency to "steal" our privacy on phones by manufacturers and govts, so this also limits possible usage.
I might have jumped the gun with my comment, but in all seriousness I can't see it as more than a toy for peace times. For serious usage it's not enough.

The chat is hilarius. Did anyone install it? I want to try that offline bluetooth mesh network to send bitcoin. It´s the answer to the blackout that happened in Spain and Portugal recently.

I really like this ux

Another cool bluetooth project
Create a mesh with your android device and use nostr without accessing the internet

Sounds useful especially for people in authoritarian countries and a similar app like the one used in Honk Kong has already been proven to work so it will have demand. Areas with poor cell service and no Wi-Fi will also find the app useful and productive. I personally probably have no use for it but overall good idea.

I love seeing a tech CEO still creating things!

I think he should take a look at the Reticulum Network

Isn't a LoRa network much better? Obviously it's more complex (and expensive), but I think it has a greater range.
It might be interesting

wonder if they could interoperate

Cool idea, but I can't see this gaining traction with normies.

Jack just seems to want to pump out as many decentralized digital products as possible. Bluesky fell apart and he walked away a while ago now but it is neat to see him launch and help with these projects that in theory really bypass the way of shareholders and wealth generation!
