Also, some years ago I was able to run a ₿ pruned node on my Samsung A52.
Unfortunately that app did not have CLN or LND built in yet.

The idea is not bad, but useless.
But we should ask: for what purpose? What will fix this? What is the big advantage?
Right now, many mobile LN apps are trying to make the LN graph sync to be smaller and have a faster and more reliable way to be able to make fast payments.
Meanwhile this guy want to make your phone even heavier and attaching an external drive just to have the full blockchain...
A mobile phone must be light and fast. Also is not necessary to be full time synced, just enough to make the payment and done.
Having a full bitcoin core node on your mobile it doesn't make sense.
A LN node is light and can sync fast with a stable bitcoin node, wherever you have it, at home, hosted or a friend of yours or even a public one (you just need to sync your blocks, so your LN node can work).
The blockchain is the most important thing to have for a LN node and if you do not have it synced or is slow, your LN node is totally useless.
A mobile phone, whatever you will do, will not 100% 24/7/365 online, will always have short times of disconnection. Not talking also about speed. A desktop SSD will always be faster than any mSD or USB stick attached to your mobile.
You have a bitcoin LN wallet on your mobile to be ready to do fast small payments not to manage your onchain stash.

Every piece of hardware a bitcoin full node can be run on is a benefit to the network.
There are many more people with old-ish Android devices laying around than people with Raspberry Pis or similar compact computers.
So I say great work!

Yes, but are smartphones suitable devices to run full nodes on?

Swell! Do you know if it's possible to run a pruned node so that a micro SD card could be enough and an external hard drive isn't required?

No idea. I have to investigate the hole complex from its roots.

I'd like to hear what you find out. There is so much to learn and so little time...

There are light clients like the popular Breez wallet, which are in fact neutrino clients.
