It took him over 4 hours and a half to beat the Italian, 130 in the ATP ranking and 38 year-old. Being a first round in Wimbledon you may expect an easy match for Alcaraz.
However, Fognini fought every single point right up to the last set. The match was very entertaining and both players battled fiercely to win points. Alcaraz won the first set 7-5, but Fognini answered winning the second in the tie-break. Alcaraz recovered the lead in the third one and he probably thought it was done.
Then, Fognini managed to win the fourth set even though he looked like tired. Half way the fourth set, Alcaraz talked to his camp and said " with his skills he can keep playing until he reaches 50". Clearly showing he was somewhat frustrated with the Italian display. Fognini ended up winning the set 6-2 and all was going to be decided in the fifth.
Alcaraz did not let the Italian to play easily and won the fifth 6-1.
So he advances to the next round, where he will play against a local tennis player, Tarvet, 733 in the ATP ranking.
