Goodbye to what we thought we knew about black holes—NASA detects one spinning at 80% the speed of light, leaving astrophysicists speechless.
It wasn’t a photo in the visible spectrum as told in the report instead, it was a reconstruction of radio emissions around the event horizon from infalling matter. You don't see the black hole, you see its influence on nearby matter and light.
Moreover, the speed is exaggerated, the studies (like those led by Ruth Daly and others) estimate the spin parameter of M87’s black hole to be very high, close to 0.9 on the Kerr scale (which maxes at 1). This means it rotates very close to the theoretical maximum, often called the "cosmic speed limit" for spin but the 240,000 km/s velocity refers not to the black hole itself, but possibly to the speed of particles in its relativistic jets or the rotational speed near the inner accretion disk which indeed approaches ~0.8c (80% of light speed) cuz black holes are mostly stationary relative to its galaxy.
