I don't run Umbrel, so can't comment on what the old node app looked like. But this sounds good:

We designed the new app with a single goal: to make running a node feel as intuitive as possible.

This doesn't sound as good:

Instead of just data, it's designed to give you a calm, clear view of your node's place in the network. You can see blocks arriving, peers connecting, transactions relaying, and your connection to it all, at a glance. It's clarity, not complexity.

But...running a node to verify your own transactions is good, however you do it

Its a new GUI. Every node in a box solution has their own GUI. Nothing to be concerned about from what I'm seeing.

right? people are having fun with making videos and don't know how to keep in concise. it's gonna have to be oscar worthy to get me to watch more than 10 or 15 seconds when scrolling on the internet.

Ah yes. They call it "Bitcoin Node App." Don't know what they called it before. Knots is similar enough they probably could have allowed users to select their preference there without too much extra work. It does look like they have a Knots App as well.

They've had a Knots app for some time. Also platforms like Umbrel and StartOS make it very easy for devs to add their apps to their systems via containers.

These node in box solutions have been nothing but great for getting people to run their own nodes. I have set up several of them. I see this as part of the long path to exposing less technical people to bitcoin. Many will never dig deeper but that wasn't true for me. Umbrel and some of the other node in box solutions saved me a ton of time getting a node spun up.

I've also set nodes up completely from scratch but that wasn't my first time and probably will never be something most people will do. Its not hard to find problems with Umbrel or StartOS if you look long enough. But, its all about tradeoffs to me.

I agree. node running maybe eventually becomes like router running (which many people manage to do), but it need to look like plug the thing in to the wall and the internet and then you are done. The node in a box companies are moving towards this; more power to 'em!

yes and Libre Bitcoin too ... the only difference is that these two are maintained by their respective developer, and the bitcoin node one is maintained by the umbrel team

There are far too many influencers with limited technical knowledge milking controversy for clout. This happens in most movements but it gets really old. Bitcoin Twitter is full of that crap.

That's not @Scoresby but it is something to be aware of. My advice in general about bitcoin, politics, and pretty much everything is to stay calm and avoid emotionalism. Its hard to think clearly when you are fearful or angry.
