There's no reason they can't generate profits off of their East Coast routes. Taking the train pretty much anywhere between DC and Boston is so much nicer than flying and costs a small fraction of the amount (even if they were charging unsubsidized prices).
I have taken those trains a few times and loved it! I just don’t love the idea of subsidizing and letting the politicians make the decisions on how to run a railroad. However, they have been doing that for a long time now.
