I had a fountain wallet already, but I'm sure I didn't make a deposit. I think it was that you got one free comment or post and I made more than one sat on mine.

When we launched, everyone got 2 free posts and 5 free comments. Then we switched to “free posts and comments if you run out sats,” then territories started getting spammed and we made it free for comments only if you run out of sats.

I had to think carefully about how to use my free comments so I'd get zapped (it wasn't called zapped back then) so I could self-sustain

Yeah, I remember there being a real sense of scarcity.

kr didn't like the limited free posts and comments. i think his sense was that they didn't give people enough time to learn and might increase retention. hard to tell if that's true or not given all the stuff that's changed.

Do you recall a proposal to allow freebies, but they essentially incurred a debt? In the event a post or comment got zapped, the zaps would first go towards the unpaid fees. Once paid off, the freebie status would be lifted and full visibility attained.

Wow, even a Stacker News sicko like me didn't keep track of all those changes.
