I just went through an article regarding traditional slavery. I thought slavery in its truest form was trading humans like objects. But in fact it's more than that. Slavery as tradition is now almost dead, there are still quite a few traditions that can be considered inhuman. Where I live, Dowry, child marriages, caste discrimination are still prevalent, though not as musch as used to be. For other places, I've listened more about sexual discrimination than anything else.
I've asked this question out of 1) curiosity, 2) because we all are from different places, may be this way we ab have a bit cultural exchange.
So according to you, What's the most inhuman tradition still alive in the world?

There are for more inhumane traditions than circumcision, but given how prevalent it is in this area, I feel like it deserves a mention.
reply
It sure deserves a mention but I've never met a man who complained about it a bit.
reply
I knew a guy with a botched one
reply
Did he complain? As far as I know circumcision is part of the Muslim theology. It's what they realise as a symbol for purity and noone complains about it.

Great topic!
I think the modern western work-life balance is deeply inhuman. We spend enormous amounts of time away from home, often outside our community, in hyper novel environments where we're subjected to highly arbitrary rules.
Our average day bears almost no resemblance to anything we're adapted to.

the modern western work-life balance
Is it a tradition? Is it something that's descended upon you from your forefathers?
I'm not saying I don't agree. This can be inhuman but it does not bring out any pity for the victims. Those who adopt this as tradition do it so willingly, not being forced. And tbh, that's what the men of all eras and mostly those from the western have been doing forever in search of wealth or maybe something else. The satisfaction is missing and the longing for riches is enormous. That's not the fault of anyone else than the person who chose to lead a life away from his family. So, how is it a tradition, a most inhumane tradition?
reply
Is it a tradition?
Sort of. we are about five or six generations into this.
reply
Ok. But it's not circumstance al, it's rather self created.

Now days, there are many things still very bad.
Just to name some of the ones that shock me:
  • female genital mutilation. Taking place in some African countries, because women shouldn't enjoy sex.
  • marriages arranged by parents.
  • Bull fighting.

female genital mutilation
This is really very ugly. I don't know anyone except one character from The Game of Thrones whose genital had been cut when he was just kid.
marriages arranged by parents.
It's not inhumane. I'm from India and most of such marriages are more successful. Also nowadays, marriages are arranged by parents but the couple is getting enough time to date each other before the actual marriage date.
Bull fighting
It's certainly not about humans. They do enjoy it but it doesn't harm humans.

It's made for crazy humans who enjoys killing slowly an animal for fun.

slavery is alive and well, it's just called human tracking now and mostly revolves around sex as opposed to having someone wash the dishes.
i feel there are tons of things that are inhumane, almost too hard to pick. i think stoning people to death is probably one of the worst, maybe forced clit aputation in some places also a contender
