Very good question...
South Africa has a number of different QR based mobile wallets. They all used their own QR format, but it became a bad user experience as you had to match the code at the till with the user's app.
The retailer QR technology providers decided to standardise on a single QR format and require all mobile wallets to support the "universal" standard. Unfortunately, this universal standard (based on EMVco) looks nothing like a Bitcoin or Lightning invoice.
Hah good to have people keeping me honest. Also, thank you, much appreciated. Looking forward to this adventure. Will send you updates as we make progress.
Would you follow a customer and fan of your work on Twitter? https://twitter.com/cryptoconverted is proudly using 0 fee routing to help onboard merchants in South Africa to the Lightning network.
If you ignore any consensus level risks on the base layer, then the associated risks are closely coupled to your own competence. The better you become at providing your service, the lower your risk. Or do you know of any practical risks that are fully outside your control?
2% low-risk growth in Bitcoin is pretty good despite what some might have you believe. Especially since it contributes to making BTC itself more useful and valuable. The risks here are actually much lower than lending your BTC to someone offering 5%+ yield
