# Bitcoin Mining Is Quietly Building the Power Grid AI Will Need  
### Once accused of “wasting” electricity, Bitcoin miners are emerging as unlikely partners for the AI boom, financing nuclear reactors, stabilizing grids, and turning wasted energy into the juice that will feed machine intelligence.  



## When the Boxes Go Silent  

On a sweltering August day in Texas, the state’s electrical grid is near the breaking point. Homes blast air-conditioning, factories roar, and a growing fleet of AI data centers crunches through queries. Then, in the flat scrubland outside Austin, something odd happens. Entire rows of shoebox-sized computers, stacked by the thousands in warehouses, power down at once.  

These aren’t AI servers. They’re Bitcoin miners. And far from being a failure, this blackout is by design. By going dark on command, the miners dump hundreds of megawatts back into the grid, letting the AI engines hum along and keeping Texans’ AC units running.  

Fred Thiel, CEO of Marathon Digital, has framed this as part of mining’s evolution. In an interview, he explains how miners can *“act as a dispatchable load that helps grid operators manage volatility,”* enabling greater renewable adoption ([YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRyHm1l7_8Q)).  


## Odd Bedfellows  

On paper, Bitcoin mining and AI computing look like estranged cousins. Both gobble electricity at an industrial scale. Both take the shape of giant data halls. Both generate heat like hell.  

But look closer and the differences pop. As a Galaxy Research study put it, mining machines “can live anywhere, just give them cheap power and a pipe to the internet.” By contrast, AI workloads demand dense networking, exotic cooling, and uptime guarantees ([Galaxy Research](https://www.galaxy.com/insights/research/bitcoin-mining-ai-revolution)).  

That divide makes co-location tricky but also tempting. Some miners are already experimenting with hybrid models. In Paraguay, **HIVE Digital** built a **200-megawatt hydro-powered campus** that mines Bitcoin and, in parallel, runs GPU cycles for AI. “HIVE is one of the few companies in the world operating with a dual business model, in Bitcoin mining and also AI Cloud computing powered by GPUs in our HPC data centers,” CEO Aydin Kilic said in the project’s 2025 update ([Nasdaq press release](https://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/hive-digital-technologies-completes-phase-2-its-yguazu-project-paraguay-reaching-18)).  

It’s easy to see the appeal. Bitcoin miners are flexible. Their rigs can switch off in seconds. AI servers can’t. So you design a campus where, when power is scarce, the miners stand down and let the GPUs run. When demand dips, the miners roar back.  

The problem is price tags. Galaxy estimates a cutting-edge AI data center at **$5–20 million per megawatt**, compared to **$0.3–0.8 million per MW** for a mining shed. For a miner to pivot, it needs land, hookups, and a stomach for capex.  


## From “Parasite” to “Partner”  

For years, critics slammed Bitcoin mining as a parasite sucking power grids dry. But increasingly, utilities are learning that miners can be, oddly enough, grid stabilizers.  

Since China’s 2021 mining ban, about **3 gigawatts of mining load** have landed in Texas’s ERCOT grid. When winter storms or heat waves slam the system, miners voluntarily power down. A Duke University–affiliated study estimated this demand-response trick saved Texans **$18 billion** by displacing gas peaker plants ([DA-RI report](https://www.da-ri.org/bitcoin-mining-ercot-2024)).  

Brad Jones, ERCOT’s interim CEO in 2022, told Bloomberg that crypto miners “provide a more flexible energy consumer than almost anything else,” adding that this flexibility helps *“find a home for new renewable energy on the grid.”*  

Meanwhile, in Kenya, a scrappy outfit called **Gridless** is proving the same point at village scale. The company installs miners at tiny hydro plants. At night, when demand vanishes, the rigs soak up excess. During the day, villagers enjoy stable cheap power. “Our mining helps lower the cost of electricity for communities by monetizing excess capacity that would otherwise go unused,” Gridless explains on its site ([Gridless](https://gridlesscompute.com)).  

In Paraguay, the mighty **Itaipú Dam** throws off more hydro than locals can use. HIVE’s Yguazú project turns that surplus into Bitcoin and, increasingly, GPU compute. “This abundant clean energy is a gift,” HIVE said in a September 2025 release ([HIVE Digital Technologies](https://www.hivedigitaltechnologies.com/news/hive-digital-technologies-completes-phase-2-of-its-yguazu-project-in-paraguay-reaching-18-ehs-producing-8-bitcoin-per-day-from-hydroelectric-power)).  

And then there is nuclear. In Pennsylvania, the **Nautilus Cryptomine** taps the Susquehanna nuclear plant for 200 megawatts of fission-fueled hashing. In October 2024, Talen Energy took full ownership of the project ([Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/talen-energy-buys-stake-nuclear-powered-bitcoin-mining-campus-2024-10-03)). Meanwhile, AWS signed a deal to offtake nearly **1,920 MW** from the same plant through 2042, earmarked not for coins, but for AI data centers ([Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/talen-energy-amazon-sign-nuclear-power-deal-fuel-data-centers-2025-06-11)).  

In other words, miners are warming the seat for AI.  


## Follow the Money  

Halvings are brutal. Every four years, miners’ block subsidy is cut in half. In 2024, it dropped to 3.125 BTC per block, pushing production costs into the **$64,000–70,000** range. With Bitcoin hovering around **$119,000** in late 2025, efficient operators are surviving, but margins are razor-thin.  

That’s why miners like HIVE brag about their “dual model.” Their Paraguay release touted operations in “Bitcoin mining and AI Cloud computing powered by GPUs” ([Nasdaq](https://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/hive-digital-technologies-completes-phase-2-its-yguazu-project-paraguay-reaching-18)). Core Scientific and Bitfarms are making similar moves.  

Others, like Riot Platforms in Texas, have turned demand-response into a revenue stream, reporting tens of millions in credits for curtailing load during peak stress.  

Thiel has pitched the broader strategy, building “low-cost, flexible load data centers” that can host Bitcoin, AI, or whatever compute makes the most sense economically ([YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRyHm1l7_8Q)).  


## The Fee Future  

The looming cliff for miners isn’t just the halving. It’s the day when transaction fees have to replace subsidies. Could AI help fill the gap?  

One possibility: autonomous AI agents making payments. Alyse Killeen of Stillmark has argued that *“Bitcoin’s infrastructure (particularly Lightning) enables seamless interaction between AI and the broader economy”* ([Finextra](https://www.finextra.com/blogposting/27832/bitcoins-starring-role-in-the-ai-and-energy-economies)). Imagine billions of microtransactions for API calls, training data, or compute leases, aggregated and settled back on Bitcoin.  

Another: energy itself. Smart meters could pay power plants by streaming sats. Solar farms could settle outputs with miners in real time. The Bitcoin blockchain would become what one analyst calls the “currency of electrons.”  

This isn’t science fiction. It’s a natural extension of what miners are already doing on the grid.  


## Fast-Forward to 2040  

By 2040, the global picture might look like this: nuclear plants running AI and Bitcoin in tandem, African solar farms financed by mining then repurposed for cloud, grids stabilized by elastic hashing load.  

Bitcoin, once branded an energy parasite, has mutated into a **currency of energy**. AI didn’t just coexist with it, it depended on it.

Leonard always felt most alive in the air.

Suspended between earth and sky, a man could think. The engines drowned out small talk. Seats and trays set the rules. No one could get to him.

Today there was only tomato juice in a plastic cup.

The seatbelt sign had been lit since takeoff. The woman beside him clutched her cross until the chain pressed a red line into her neck. A baby whimpered behind him and then hiccuped itself quiet.

Condensation slid down his cup. Each droplet fell at its own pace, but ended in the same place. People did that too.

Claire, with her soft blonde hair, her expensive perfumes, and her rotting heart. She’d be “at yoga” now, which meant Alex - the personal trainer with perfect teeth and hands that had never known a tool. A man who sweated more over filters than steel.

The fuselage groaned and flexed. Outside the small oval window, a flicker of white split the clouds - a thin, jagged line that vanished before he could blink. Leonard set both palms flat on his knees and held them there.

The pilot’s voice came over the intercom, calm but clipped:
“Ladies and gentlemen, we’re about to encounter some rough air. For your safety, please take your seat immediately and fasten your seatbelt. We’ll keep the seatbelt sign on until conditions improve.”

Leonard closed his eyes. There was nothing left for Claire to take. Not anymore.

Two weeks earlier.

The garage smelled of oil and damp concrete. The chest freezer hummed. A moth battered itself against the bare bulb, left a powder mark, tried again.

Leonard crouched beside Timmy, nine years old.

“If Daddy dies from a heart attack or dies on a plane,” Leonard said, “you’re the man of the house.”

Timmy looked up - brown eyes, serious, waiting for clear rules.

“These twelve words are a map,” Leonard said. He showed two folded slips. “Not for Mommy. For you. Never give them to her. Not even if she cries.”

“What if she says please?” Timmy asked.

“She will. Don’t,” Leonard said.

Timmy nodded. He wasn’t quick, but he kept what he was given.

“Say it back,” Leonard said.

“Don’t tell Mommy. Even if she cries. Book first, then the slate. Words in order.”

“Good,” Leonard said, touching the boy’s shoulder.

Timmy sat cross-legged in front of the TV his mother always put on when she was doing yoga upstairs. He looked up from his Nintendo Switch.

A red ticker slid along the bottom of the screen: Flight to Amsterdam makes emergency landing after turbulence injures 25 passengers.

Claire came downstairs with damp hair, robe loose. Alex followed with his mat under one arm, smiling like he had improved the household.

“Was Daddy on that one?” Timmy asked.

Claire stared at the ticker. “What makes you say that?”

“He said if his plane crashes, we get the treasure.”

Her phone slid from her palm to the carpet. “What treasure?”

“The magic words,” Timmy said. “For the magical internet money.”

Alex smirked and then erased the smirk when he saw her face.

“Show me,” she said.

In Timmy’s room, Claire yanked books from the shelf she had never dusted until she found the one that looked wrong between the colorful Dahl children’s books — The Key to Rebecca. Pages stuck from old humidity. It opened to the color photo section, a belly dancer. Claire flicked past it. A folded slip fell out.

Six words in Leonard’s cramped hand:

abandon – silver – battle – frost – hollow – cake

Claire’s heart thudded.

“Is this all of it?” she asked.

Timmy hesitated. In his head, breaking the promise might somehow help his father.

“Half,” he said.

“Where’s the rest?”

“In the roses.”

Claire made the face she used for prices she did not accept. She slipped the slip into her palm and headed for the back door.

The rain had eased to a silver drift. The flower bed held water and the clean smell of ripped green. Claire stepped into it barefoot. Her silk blouse clung to her ribs. The bed was her pride - “my little Eden,” she had called it for strangers on Insta. Now the garden looked back at her without sympathy.

She grabbed stems and tore them up. Roots came with them. Mud streaked her thighs. Thorns drew lines on her arms. She ignored them. Alex stood under a wide black umbrella, checking his phone between glances at her ruined work.

“There,” Timmy said. “Under the slate.”

Claire pushed her fingers into the soil, found the edge, and levered the flat stone up. It came free with a wet heave. Below sat a short PVC tube capped at both ends, glue rings dull and even. She pulled it out. Earth ran off the white plastic in slicks.

“Hold this,” she said.

Alex took the slate like a butler takes a tray, keeping the umbrella over himself.

The cap wouldn’t turn. “Tools,” she said.

Timmy ran to the garage and returned with the rubber strap wrench. She cinched it, pulled. The glue cracked. The cap turned.

Inside: a vacuum-sealed Mylar sleeve with a silica gel packet clear as glass. The inner packet gave when she tore it. The slip slid out, dry and stiff.

Another six words:

orchard – cabbage – daughter – eager – kangaroo –
…and then a word beginning with TRU - maybe trust or truth.

Claire stared at the smear until the shapes stopped meaning anything.

“Inside,” she said.

The kitchen smelled of soil and metal. Mud and leaf prints marked the tile.

Alex set his mat on the counter and downloaded AQUA. “It’s the one he always talks about,” he said. The blue icon glowed.

Claire typed. She guessed the last word: trust. The screen blinked:

Please check your recovery phrase and try again.

She tried truss. Same result. Thrust. Same. She tried rust. Must. She tried the kind of guess that came from anger. The message did not change.

“Maybe it’s case sensitive,” Alex said.

“It’s not,” she said.

She tried trust again. The wallet opened.

Balance: 0.00000010 BTC

She stared. “What the hell is this?”

Alex leaned with care so he wouldn’t touch the dirt on her sleeve. “Is that… a lot?”

Something left her face. She threw the phone. It hit the tile and spun.

Timmy stood in the doorway, small and stiff. “Daddy said never trust you,” he said.

Her mouth opened, but the words didn’t come. She looked down at her arms - thin red lines, dirt under every nail. She saw her reflection in the oven door: hair down, face wet, blouse clinging, eyes blank.

She turned on the tap. The mud let go in strings. The cuts stung. The sink looked like a field after rain.

She shut off the water and stood, palms flat on the counter. The hum in the room was the refrigerator and the drip from the torn Mylar.

She opened the bin under the sink and dropped the smeared slip in. Onions, lemon cleaner, old plastic came up. 
She closed the bin with her hip.

She walked to the glass door and stared out at the hole where her bed had been. The slate lay on its side. The ceramic rabbit was face down, one ear in mud.

She looked at the TV. The anchor was talking about the Consumer Prices Index.

She opened the app again: 0.00000010 BTC. She pushed a button and it said: 10 sats.

“And now what?”

“Can we call someone?” Alex asked.

“Who?” Claire said.

“A bank,” he said.

She laughed once. It sounded like a cough pulled wrong.

He adjusted the umbrella as if he were still under it. “I should go,” he said.

“Go,” she said.

He went.

Timmy crossed to the bin, opened it, and took the smeared slip back out when she turned away. He smoothed it. It stayed wrong. He folded it, slid it into The Key to Rebecca, and also slid in a scrap on which he had written TRUST in block letters. He put the book back and looked at it for a long time, like a door that would open for the right hands.

Upstairs, the shower ran. She did not go.

The plane hit a patch that lifted Leonard’s stomach and set it back. Gasps rose and fell. The woman’s cross chain left a deeper mark. A man in a suit asked no one, “Is this normal?”

Leonard kept his eyes closed. He pictured Claire barefoot in the mud, silk clinging like a bandage, roses ruined, phone on tile, 10 sats on the screen. He let the picture of her tear at the soil and rip up her Eden until she was nothing but scratches, wet fabric, and that empty number.

He knew where the real thing lived. Cold steel. Three-of-five. Two signatures that did not care about perfume or tears. A time lock that would ignore pleading and wait for a birthday.

He thought of the garage. The moth beating the bulb. The boy’s slow nod. The sentence he had given his son to say back: Don’t tell Mommy. Book first, then the slate. Words in order. He had kept the rest in his head, where moisture couldn’t bleed it.

He lifted the cup and finished the tomato juice. It had the taste of a can that remembered tomatoes.

The landing gear lowered with a click he liked. Honest steel meeting air.

The runway rose up and accepted the plane. Wheels found it and held.

Leonard opened his eyes. A seam of sunlight cut the cloud. The edge of the sea showed blue and patient.

He let the picture of Claire rot in his mind until there was nothing left but mud and the word TRUST.

We are trying to start up a new orangepill Bitcoin website. There will be sats stacking involved: probably flowing to a costudial Lightning wallet. 

Question: Is there a possibility to make splits: pay the web designer, content creator when sats arrive in this wallet?

I started getting into Bitcoin towards the end of 2019, and it completely changed the way I saw everything. It was such a big deal for me that it took three months to get used to this new outlook. I kept it all to myself, stacking sats like crazy, without anyone to talk to about this whole new world I had discovered.

My first purchase of Bitcoin felt like I was opening Pandora’s box—I was excited but also scared, like I was doing something I shouldn’t. It took me a while to get more comfortable, learn how to use a hardware wallet, and dive deeper into Bitcoin.

Back then, there weren’t many Bitcoin podcasts. Now, I listen to them on Fountain and earn sats while I do it—it’s amazing how fast things have changed.

After a year, I finally went to my first Bitcoin conference. I didn’t talk to anyone; I just listened and absorbed everything about the latest developments in Bitcoin. I was just a nerd in the crowd, feeling a bit less alone but still scared of my identity being revealed. That fear of being doxed? I’ve never been able to shake it off.

The world of Bitcoin has changed so much since I first got into it. The second halving is almost here, and weirdly, I can barely remember what I did during the first one.

Lately, I’ve been feeling down. The ups and downs of Bitcoin don’t excite me anymore—I just see the rest of the world in chaos and feel helpless about it.

Is anyone else feeling this way as the halving approaches? 

Bitcoin Halving Depression

I need your help! I am an amateur Bitcoiner who has been stacking sats on the Lightning wallet Muun. However, due to the recent high on-chain fees, it has become impossible for me to continue stacking sats on this wallet. I feel like a complete moron, as I have been unable to find a suitable replacement wallet that is non-custodial and easy enough for even a five-year-old to use.

That's why I'm reaching out to the Bitcoin community for advice. I am looking for a non-custodial Lightning wallet that is user-friendly and easy to use. I want to continue stacking sats, but I need a moron-proof wallet that can handle the current high on-chain fees.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know. I'm open to any and all recommendations, as I'm eager to get back to stacking sats and building my Bitcoin portfolio. Thank you in advance for your help!
