While lighting up a cigarette was once considered a sign of class and sophistication or, at the very least, an act of coolness, smoking seems to have lost some of its spark in recent years. According to the Federal Trade Commission, 173.5 billion cigarettes were sold in the United States in 2022, which is by far the lowest number since the FTC started tracking cigarette sales in 1963.

Absolutely. Smoking didn’t just lose its cool — it got exposed. What used to be marketed as “sophistication” was just corporate propaganda wrapped in addiction. Now people flex different things: health, sovereignty, financial independence… stacking sats instead of puffing debt smoke.
Funny how cultural narratives shift. Makes you wonder… what else today is being sold as “cool” but will look ridiculous in 20 years? (Hint: fiat.)

Cigarettes haven’t been cool for a long time

It never was for me

I have never liked smoking, but prices also do not help consumers; as always, fiat is part of the problem.

there is evidence on the streets that nicotine helps break down the nanoparticulate scaffolds that form inside the living tissue after the substance was introduced thru injectables;
basically, long-c0vid patients get better with a nicotine patch after nothing else helps; i like an occasional high-quality natural cigar, and the more i learn, the more i wish that i started earlier; other practices help detox too; the additional benefit of smoking natural tobacco, imho, is the stimulation of airway cilia to expel all kinds of junk that is fumigated into our atmosphere;
now, this is all theoretical/anecdotal, and i do not have the time right now to dive into deep research, so i just run with what makes sense; yolo
just watch the trailer at ds2nano.com - halfway down the page;

I quit smoking long ago and literally the only thing I miss about it is loitering around looking fucking cool.
Still not worth tho.

Lol now overlay that with manufacturing jobs, to produce goods locally you need an equal amount of nicotine consumption
I don't make the rules, just how it works

How you mention, it was once considered something that the upper class towards, and obvious everyone always wants to be or imitate the upper class, I suppose the years pass and it will be demonstrated that the tobacco companies manipulated that bias so that we all consummate tobacco and they enrich their pockets, and adding that now people are more aware of diseases out of tobacco.
I don't think the Mr. Philip Morris this content with that graph 📉

This probably has a lot to do with the fact that Vapes and other types of electronic cigarettes are gaining popularity among young people and not only... and this has somehow became the new cool.
