Have you ever tried explaining Bitcoin amounts like 0.00004700 BTC to a friend? They usually get confused — and that’s exactly what BIP-176 tried to solve.
Proposed by Jimmy Song back in 2017, BIP-176 suggests using “bits” as a standard unit, where:
1 bit = 100 sats = 0.00000100 BTC
The goal? Better UX and mental clarity when dealing with small amounts — especially for payments, tips, and onboarding new users.
💡 Why it matters: “I just bought a coffee for 2,800 bits” sounds a lot friendlier than “0.00002800 BTC.”
Fiat systems already use smaller denominations (cents), so “bits” would feel more familiar.
Could help onboard more people into Bitcoin with less friction.
🤔 Why it didn’t catch on (yet): By now, “sats” are deeply ingrained in Bitcoin culture.
Lightning wallets and P2P apps default to sats.
Introducing a second unit might create confusion rather than clarity.
Still, as more people join Bitcoin and start stacking, maybe it’s worth revisiting?
What do you think? Should we revive BIP-176 and start using “bits”? Or are sats here to stay?

People can call it whatever they want. Imo its honestly one of the most irrelvant debates that is going on.
Have fun explaining to people that there are now 2.1Quadrillion bitcoin instead of just 21M like everyone knows
Im a Sats man

I don't think we need another denomination for units. Even dollars don't have three denominations, it's just dollars and cents. I also agree with @Car who said on SNL that "bits" demeans the value because it's associated as ephemeral 0s and 1s.
I wouldn't mind changing sats to Bitcoin. At some point, 1 Bitcoin will be such a large denomination of value that it won't be useful as a unit of measurement.

In my opinion, 'satoshis' sounds better and keeps the spirit of Bitcoin alive. It's unique, already widely recognized, and changing it to 'bit' might just create more confusion. Let's keep stacking sats!

Stacking sats sounds much better than stacking bits. Sats for satoshis makes much more sense than bits (a unit of computer information).

totally, i think so too!!

1$ = 100 cents 1 bitcoin = 100M sats

I think it should stay as SATs, making changes like that would only generate more confusion
