Just like the title says. I went to Steak n Shake today, paid in sats for some fries and a drink... and WOW. I think it was something like 5k sats and even seeing 'sats' on the receipt... much less the dollar/sat exchange rate, much less the term 'lightning' on a Steak n Shake - printed receipt in the "real world"...
Color me impressed!!!
Paid with my own node, from home using LND, no it wasn't 'custodial', no it wasn't 'from coinbase'... No it wasn't easier to just use "wallet of Satoshi" because "Lightning is captured"...
I ******* opened that channel myself. And bought fries with it. And that just totally blows my mind.
I really appreciate what Steak n Shake is doing, and I hope there will be more companies integrating Lightning to jumpstart the real Bitcoin economy.
That's all
I made the pilgrimage on Friday and was met by a several other bitcoiners. Pretty cool experience and I'm glad to see like minded individuals supporting lightning as a medium of exchange. I'll definitely be going out of my way to give Steak n Shake some repeat business.
reply
Dude that's how it felt... it hard to explain to someone who hasn't been playing around with lightning for a few years.
But yes the Steak n Shake Payment 'terminal' feels like a "Mecca" in the desert - like a 'real' place to use Sats it was cool. Like the Holy Land

It's very cool. I love seeing this stuff happing in the real world. I haven't had steak and shake for years. Never been a fan, but I suppor it. I believe Five Guys should be next.

Does Steak n Shake have their own node?
What was the destination of the lighting transaction?

I think they use www.tryspeed.com
reply
It went through several lightning nodes (4?) The destination I don't remember :)

run lncli listpayments --max_payments 5 to find that payment and its last hop's pub_key. show us your non-custodial lnd skills!
reply
I looked... it was speed1 ;)
reply
I think I read they convert it instantly to dollars- this makes the accounting process much more straightforward for them otherwise they would face an accounting nightmare to calculate the capital gains taxes due as a result of every transaction relative to the usd/sats exchange rate at all the different time points.

I know its very likely a marketing thing and we aren't gonna see a bunch of copy cats tomorrow but its still cool and proves a point.
BUT, the fact that it IS marketing shows us something. There is a large enough market to make someone think they should spend the time and money to do this. That's great.
reply
When I saw this I could barely control myself. Take that central bankers LOL
reply
If it results in increased sales and profits then other retail chains might well follow. Vote with your sats and support sats accepting retailers. It is the least we can do.

Somewhere Darthcoin is smiling with glee. I plan to make my pilgrimage to Steak ‘n Shake this holiday

It's worth it

Awesome!! Let's hope more restaurants follow suit. There's no steak n' shake near me.

Yeah, this is how it starts! Gradually then suddenly. Love the adoption by Steak n Shake. I really hope other restaurants and vendors follow suit!

We just got back. Dude, so impressed on every level. Also, looks like they’re just going to lean in hard on this clientele now.

I used to love this company back in the day and thought they had gone down hill a few years back. I’m so convinced they’re going to be on a big comeback after today.
reply
I mean the fries drink and burger was like... under 10k sats. Who could beat that?
reply
I love seeing the fiat amount :)

I see that Steak 'n Shake is a BIP 177 early adopter.
reply
I wonder what backend they are using to accept corn.
Would be super dope if they just had their own btcpayserver running
reply
That's awesome. How was the food?
reply
Not bad. Maybe not a 5 guys or in-and-out burger kind of place (but those are more expensive) but for a cheap burger and fries it was fine. And paying with sats is the whole idea anyway.

Fries are great! Thinly cut, fried in beef tallow. If you like smash burgers, they are pretty good. Milkshakes are fantastic!
(As a mom, I love that they have mini kid sized milkshakes too… they get a treat without the ridiculous serving sizes. Although, as we were headed there I lamented to my husband they the vegetable offerings are limited to the tomato, lettuce and onions on burgers… wish they offered a salad.)
All-in-all, decent “treat” meal made especially amazing because we paid in bitcoin. I love any chance we have to model making purchases in bitcoin for our kids.

Good for you

I will have to check it out next time I am in the US.

I'm curious if you can share any details around the Lightning node Steak and Shake is using. If you are running your node I think you could find out some info.
reply
It's called "speed1" and interesting enough that's what it said on the receipt too. Tryspeed. Must be a commercial LSP?
reply
Seeing “sats” on a fast food receipt just blew my mind. This is the kind of real world Bitcoin I’ve been waiting for non custodial, from my own node. It’s happening.
reply
It's awesome dude. Paying from your own Lightning node for fries in Suburban America... it's the holy land.

Wonder if the one in Ibiza also accepts Bitcoin? Not on btcmap.org though...
reply
It's a shame there are some who wish to utterly confuse nomenclature about bitcoin and Satoshis. I vote we don't change it and sats to the dollar becomes a thing.
reply
That's what it showed on the receipt!!! The sats/dollar exchange rate which of course is mind-blowing
reply
Slowly but surly, this will be available in many other chains. I love to see it.

I hope so

Fuck me. This is my dream to do this in person. But literally nobody takes bitcoin where I live. I'll even settle for on chain.
Wish I lived near a steak n shake.

It's just a QR code at SnS. If you can pay on Stacker... you can pay the QR code. Lightning is actually really easy to use non-custodially. Either buy a Lightning channel, get a 'just in time' channel or run your own full Lightning node...
It's basically plug and play
reply
Any other companies considering doing the same thing? This is great!
reply
Lol... that's quite joyous
