This morning the House Financial Services and House Agriculture Committees were supposed to hold a joint hearing titled "American Innovation and the Future of Digital Assets: A Blueprint for the 21st Century." Last night however it broke that Financial Services Ranking Member Maxine Waters was going to object to the hearing. Due to the hearing being a joint hearing between two Committee it requires unanimous consent which typically happens without an issue. However, this did not occur.
As soon as the gavel struck and the Chairman started speaking Rep. Waters immediately began to talk over him stated she objected and due to rules the hearing was over. When done with her objection she tried to walk right out of the hearing room however, she ran into an issue as the Chairs of the two committee's had questions for her including, what she was objecting to and if they could address it to lift her objection. Since she had left the room a staffer had to go get her. When she came back into the room she stated she objected to the hearing because "of the corruption of the President of the United States and his ownership of crypto and his oversight of all the agencies."
This then resulted with the Chairman of the Financial Services Committee to ask to speak at which point he pointed out the plain and simple facts. This hearing was a rules of the road hearing and multiple concessions had been made to the minority, which the Republicans did not have to make but did so, for the hearing to move forward. The legislation that was supposed to be discussed was no longer going to be and the minority was given an additional witness even. Not to mention the Ranking Member had been aware and involved with this hearing for 6 weeks before the 11th hour stunt.
Ranking Member Waters then asked to be called upon again where she insisted her objection be heard and then invited all the Members of both sides to the CVC for what is called a "shadow hearing" to discuss what she claims they should be discussing.... "Trump's crypto corruption." Mind you once again today hearing was supposed to be over a digital assets blueprint which obviously would touch on what should be legal and illegal. The other Ranking Member of the Ag committee Mr. Lynch then asked to talk about the objection where he immediately went off the deep end into decrying Trump and his family and how the are the most blatant corrupt people ever. When the Chairman retook control Ranking Member Lynch continued to just shout over him.... a naturally super classy move... the Ranking Member then tried to enter into the record his remarks except.... Ranking Member Water's objection had already ended the hearing which the Chair told the Ranking Member.
For whatever reason, I can only think because people were still talking, Ranking Member Waters once again again got onto the mic and objected to the hearing and in my opinion seemed taken off-guard when the Chairman stated that the hearing would now move to a roundtable so that the 5 participants would be able to discuss the topic with them. In a funny funny move the cameras panned out to the Ranking Member walking out, however, she was only followed by a couple of Members. The majority of Democratic Members present stayed for the roundtable.
The publicity stunt of all of this is WILD and by far one of the wildest moments I have seen given the Committee Hearing had come so far and then one Member tried to rip the rug out. It is just the latest sign of Financial Services Ranking Member Waters' just not understanding crypto and blockchain technology. She has been a consistent issue with both sides when it comes to getting anything done. When she was the Chairwomen she was called out for consistently moving the goal posts and now as a Ranking Member she can't unify her own Committee on these issues. Often she has between 6 and 8 defections a huge number considering this is just a Committee!
It is the latest display of Democrats not only breaking president and decorum but also just looking like fools when no one leaves with them. The whole idea was for it to be only Republicans left in the hearing room but instead there were 7-8 left Democrats still in the hearing room. When the Republicans only have 12-13 Members this just turned into a very balanced roundtable tanking the whole point.
