I'm on a Pixel 7, and definitely wouldn't use it without a case -- it's also kind of slippery, so even if the glass is great, I need something that allows me to grip it better. Still, good to know that phones are getting less breakable, even if I'll never feel comfortable enough to rely on that.
I don't think BBC has a paywall, but here's a link if folks want to avoid them.

You know, there was a time in which AppleCare was so trashed in general culture but now I think of it as my phone case because of unlimited device replacement.

I've never used a phone case but had at least two or three broken screens. I like to experience the raw phone and material. I also suspect cases make us desensitized to dropping them.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least; I do wonder if anyone's studied how much that happens, and adjusted risk analysis based on it (or similar things, like wearing bike helmets or driving a car with certain safety features).

I'd like to live this way, unfortunately all my phones are slippery so I need rugged cases

What kind of device do you use. The durability of your phone depends on the brand.
