Reddit is dead internet theory manifested. I went there recently and even the smaller right leaning subs are getting standard reddit left wing bots.
I'm bit sure if there's many humans left there, so I'm not sure whose going to pay lol.

Who gets the money reddit or the people that run the subs?

It's a Patreon-style paywall. Mods can choose to paywall their sub and make money from it. But if they want it to remain free, it will.
