In case you didn't know, I teach at an international school in China. I've recently been guiding a Chinese coworker of mine into the labyrinth that is Bitcoin. I've gotten him set-up with a Bitcoin wallet. But I keep thinking, eventually I want him to understand lightning...

But I'm a fan of self-custody... And I can't very well tell him,

"Okay, so just download @zeus, and buy some inbound liquidity with their LSP with a 1 million sat channel. And, OH! let's be private and use MPP, so let's make THREE 1 million sat channels... Wait, what's that, you don't have 3 million sats?? Come on, why are you so poor?? I've spent hundreds of dollars setting up a personal server to run my lightning node, I route whole bitcoins through my set-up!"

Okay, sorry, I'm digressing too much, but you get my point, onboarding to self-custodial lightning has challenges for someone who owns no bitcoin and doesn't earn or save a lot (yet) in bitcoin.

So, meet jadeswan86— not his real name obviously, but I've set him up with a coinos.io as a stop-gap measure for him to see the power of lightning and nostr and community.

Unfortunately it IS custodial, but has some positives. It's a based Canadian company (soon to be the 51st state of the US 😂) that is private and has ways for you to withdraw (via lightning, or more importantly for my coworker, to his on-chain wallet) when you've hit a certain threshold.

I'm sure you've all seen those posts where someone says, "hey I just got my taxi driver to sign up for @walletofsatoshi and accept bitcoin". I love sending a few thousand sats to people like that.

As much as I try to avoid things like WoS, they are a good starting point for beginners to accept small sums of bitcoin.

So here's what I propose, send my mate a beer or a coffee.

Why? For the *LuLz of course.

I'm trying to get him set up with a @stackernews and nostr account soon. Hopefully he can use nostr to get hooked up with his other privacy focused Chinese brethen and SN to share about life in China. Dude is super based and has a lot of contempt for his government.

He was so curious how I got my blog "out there" and I told him about SN and Nostr.

He doesn't need your charity. He doesn't complain. This is just something fun I wanted to do for him.

But just being real, locals make shit here.
