It appears the number one candidate for the NY Jets vacant head coaching job is Detroit Lions Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn.
Should the Jets hire him?
I am not sure. I am having a hard time assessing Glenn. Their run defense was very good this season. The pass defense struggled again but they had a ton of injuries. Overall considering the amount of injuries he seems to have done a good job, but one thing I think is hard to quantify is how much of a benefit having a dominant offense is to a defense. It keeps them off the field and allows them to take more chances to try and turn the ball over. The Lions D had the benefit of knowing their offense was going to put up over 30 points every single game, so all they needed to do was make a couple big plays to stall drives or get turnovers and they would win.
Also, the Jets just let Robert Saleh go who was also considered a great defensive mind that energized, motivated and got the best out of his players. Isn't Aaron Glenn just the next Robert Saleh? Shouldn't the Jets be moving in a different direction? Trying to get an offensive minded coach, drafting a QB and building for the future?
What say you @siggy47 @StillStackinAfterAllTheseYears @BTC_Bellzer? Do you want the Jets to hire Aaron Glenn?
Sats for all, GR
The Jets have shown they can blow it with offensive and defensive HCs, to be honest. If Saleh had been allowed to get a real OC that he could work with, he might have had more success (see also mortgaging the team for a QB well past his prime, bringing in deadweight people he liked, etc).
Having said that, it so hard to tell with anyone without HC experience how good they'll be. But I think the locker room needs a win right now, and Glenn's a coach who does well with his players. I'd rather get thing settled with a decent coach and GM, allowing them to focus on the future.
Plus, I liked Glenn when he played for us.

Boy, I can relate to that.

Head coach has to hire good assistant coaches. Does he have a staff ready to join him
reply
Rich Cimini at ESPN was reporting that he'd been in talks with a potential staff, though no details of who.

Thanks for the analysis. Saleh was in a tough spot. I do think he would have been better if he had a quality OC with him. I hope he comes back to the 49ers as DC but he might get the Jags job.
I do think bringing in some of the Lions culture won't hurt the Jets. Do you think they will draft a QB or try to get a bridge guy like Darnold?
reply
The market seems so weak this year, I can't imagine them nabbing someone while still have capital to draft at other positions. Then again, your team managed to find their QB at the least likely spot imaginable, so who knows what's out there?
I'd be amused with Darnold coming back after they jettisoned him, but don't know that he wouldn't revert to his Jets output. Feels like either way, it'll go poorly. Guess that's why I don't get paid the big Jets GM bucks.

Sam with the jets again?
Zach Wilson was another setback.
Hire someone from Sean McVay tree

I have no special knowledge, which I guess qualifies me to make the decision on the Jets HC job. Aaron Glenn seems smart, and I always liked him as a player. In the end, what's the difference? This is the Jets we're talking about.
reply
Haha good assessment.
Maybe the better question is should Aaron Glenn want the job? Haha

Exactly

There are only 32 of these jobs
I laugh when people wonder is the Cowboys job desirable
reply
I liked him as a player but I do think if the Jets are going to go with a young QB then they need a good OC and a good offensive minded HC.
I also don't care about popularity, the Jets clearly need a hardass and there's a good chance that DJ Reed is going to walk this offseason.

It’s like hiring Todd Bowles in 2015
We are going to blitz on every down

Bowles did win a Super Bowl. All the Jets need is the best QB in the league. Haha

As an assistant not head coach
reply
That's right. He was DC at that time and took over for Arians a couple years later.
