I'm using Proton for my company e-mails and VPN.

I switched for privacy.
However, I am coming to think that there are backdoors to everything, everywhere.
I guess that I am just paranoid about all of this.

Well considering that Google is the EVIL CIA or NSA, Proton has to be somewhat better!

Have my doubts about Proton but hope they are what they say they are.
Am moving from google to proton...although it takes time to move everything...and costs a few sats for sufficient data storage.
Would love to see someone with the time/skills to investigate Proton and check if they are as genuine and pro privacy as they claim...as they would be the perfect front for the EVIL ORGS . . . would pay a bounty of 50,000sats for a detailed independent investigative report on Protons integrity or lack thereof and 100,000 more if it reveals anything seriously compromising.

Unfortunately, still missing a tool for making presentations and some kind of calc. And the current docs are still early.

Why not self-hosting your own email server with your own domain?

If your domain is not well-known, it will most likely be sent directly to spam.

bullshit. You must configure your domain with all the requirements for running an email server. DMARC, PTR, etc see mxtoolbox.com

Welcome to the group of those who want to De-Google ourselves.
I have also started migrating to services like Protonmail or Tutamail
and I have also started using other applications, like maps or double authentication, to stop using Google services or applications that require Google services to work.

I began the process five years ago. As proton has grown and seemingly has an equivalent solution for every google product, I find myself now hunting for proton alternatives. I'm not going to put my faith in any one company.

I'd recommend. Not sure I've found m/any other email provider that offers quite as many tools as Proton does and does it so well. Even with a free account, it's basically good enough to use for secure email with other Proton users.
Not sure all of the services warrant paying so much. Having a walle and password manager are nice features. Useful in combination with secure layered thinking, as you said.
I just really don't like the alternative of having a google/apple device, OS, email, cloud services. It's whack.
