Institute contributor Daniel Larison on the hawks Trump is adding to his administration.
"A president interested in fewer wars and fewer overseas entanglements would not choose someone like Waltz for this position. As his own record on Afghanistan shows, Waltz is not someone who wants to extricate the United States from unnecessary conflicts and commitments. The U.S. seems likely to increase its security commitments if Trump follows Waltz’s recommendations."

Having met the guy and listened to him he take a lot of his ideas from the idea from Teddy Roosevelt's Big Stick idea which is a tried and true method that works. Iran, China, and Russia hate us so scare the shit outta them and get the results.
Waltz also was against the way we withdrew from Afghanistan and rightfully so because not only does it go against basic operations but it resulted in 13 Americans dying because the President made terrible choices

I don't think a better withdrawal from Afghanistan was on the table. My understanding is that despite Trump's insistence on leaving, the generals never made the preparations. That way they could keep telling Trump that leaving would be a disaster and never have to do it.
Biden shouldn't have moved the withdraw date back from the one Trump set. That probably did make it worse, but someone had to rip that band aid off.
