Prompted by this fine post #766083 by @denlillaapan I decided to see what is happening over on BlueSky.
I haven't had a lot of success with my Stacker Sports Twitter account other than with the bots. I am big with the bots. So, I thought it might be a good time to reach out to a new audience considering this purported "mass migration" to BlueSky.
So, I created a Stacker Sports account followed some folks talking about Sports and Bitcoin and I was off to the races. I described my initial findings in a comment on the other post as follows: "so far my interpretation is it is mostly a support group for people who want to light themselves on fire because Trump won." I crack myself up.
I did have a nice chat with a fellow Canadian Bitcoiner who is also a nostr fan and is familiar with SN. Maybe that was fruitful. And I had a wonderful chat with a self described Grandma, who is also Canadian and a Blue Jays fan. She isn't a fan of the Blue Jays front office either so we had something to bond over.
While BlueSky seemed like a ghost town other than people who wanted to rage about Trump things were looking up.
Then I started talking to people about Bitcoin and everything went downhill. A couple folks were reasonable but everyone else was sure it was a scam and that Trump was going to destroy America with it. One guy told me it is fascist and anti-human and another guy said it is worse than Bernie Maidoff. I was trying my best not to troll these people or call them brainwashed simpletons (that took a lot of effort on my part- see the things I do for Bitcoin and SN?). I shared links from bitcoin.rocks btcmap.org stacker.news and a great article from @anita about Bitcoin and human rights. And what did I get for my troubles- Labelled as spam. Initially it was just one comment so I didn't think much of it other than commenting it was a lame way for someone to disagree. And then I realized my post and all my replies from the last few hours (33 total items) had all been labelled spam.
So, my BlueSky orange, purple and SN pilling effort is now over. You may now commence laughing at me for wasting my time.
Sats for all, GR
This is so ironic. I tried out blue sky when it first came out. And it was very gay and trans centric. Just not my vibe. So I never went on it for over a year. Then just yesterday I’m like why am I still on this platform let me delete my account. Had to remember the email address I used to sign up and reset my password and then I deleted the account and the app.
And here you are posting about it hahaha.
Yeah I found blue sky to be a democrat/leftist echo chamber that just wasn’t my vibe. It appears you don’t need an invite code anymore but I think this is the bifurcation of the internet playing out in front of us.
reply
I knew it would be left leaning but I didn't know I was going to get labelled spam. Haha.

I didn't find what they were talking about interesting, so I just use SN mostly, and Nostr a little.
reply
Yes, I am also like you, now I am more active on SN than other social media, because on SN there are lots of discussions that can be discussed, I am also happy to be able to discuss with my friends on SN.

I also prefer the layout of SN when reading. It’s just much easier than reading a bunch cards.
reply
Hunh. I've "used" Bluesky a lot without logging in (similar to Twitter), just seeing something someone shared with me elsewhere, but I haven't tried actually diving into the community there. I didn't even know it was possible to get labeled as spam.
ETA: Just found your posts, and it doesn't look like there's a spam label from the outside, at least. Maybe someone was trolling you somehow?
ETA 2: Just asked a friend who does have a Bluesky account to take a look, and she doesn't see a label either.
reply
Labelled as spam on my end. All of them.
reply
Actually you are right. Just logged back in and I am no longer spam. I wonder if it gets lifted after an hour. Now I feel like a liar.
reply
Wonder if it's a thing where someone can label you, but if it looks like they're spamming (and labeling all your posts is definitely that), there's some check in place?
(And you're obviously not a liar.)
reply
No idea how it works. Just know at first I noticed it as one comment and then all my comments and post and then about an hour later everything was visible again so I think it is some kind of timeout. Maybe someone reported all my stuff out of spite and it gets labeled until reviewed? First time using the platform so not really sure.
reply
Yeah, and good incentive to not have future times using it.
Weirdly, my major social media outside of SN is FB, not because it's good in any way (I can list 100 things I hate about it), but because I can be in a group of wrestling fans or an author's works, and not have to worry about everything getting labeled spam or getting deleted.
(Also because it's literally the only way to know what some family members are up to.)
reply
My wife still uses facebook to keep in touch with family. I think that is the most common use now.
reply
That's so weird.
Just did a quick search and found a Reddit thread (of course) talking about this, and it sounds like labels are something people can subscribe to (which would explain why I can't see them)?
But literally having you see those labels constantly even if others don't feels really like a big middle finger.
reply
Update: My spam label has now been lifted. Either it was a timeout of some sort or was somehow reviewed and rescinded.

Jack Dorsey sent them an email (even though he's no longer a part of it afaik)
reply
Kudos to you for trying. I certainly wouldn't have lasted long in that kind of environment.
Do you still plan to post there? It might be fun to go out with a bang.
reply
I will try it again. It seems be label has been removed. Let’s see how long it takes me next time before I get labelled again.
reply
It would be the ultimate triumphant exit of a toxic conservative ultra-right-wing Bitcoiner. Haha, I don't even know how to describe it anymore, but whatever annoys leftists. I wouldn't have had that courage and patience.
reply
I think you didn't waste your time. You found out for all of us that Bluesky is not the good replacement of Twitter. It should labelled as achievement or a victory rather than a failure.
reply
That’s a positive spin on it. I don’t think it was a waste of time either but it felt like it in the moment when I got labeled as spam after hours or commenting and engaging honestly with people but it seems it was only a temporary thing as my label has been removed now.
reply
So you gonna be back to Bluesky? I don't think you should. It's better we try and make Nostr better.
reply
I might try one more time. We will see.
reply
It's okay. I'll be there to support you. Tell me when you'll be there.
reply
Oh this is anticlimax for you with Bluesky! I'm not a fan of any other platform but I had good vibes about bluesy but all are shattered now. Thanks for sharing.
reply
I did manage to get out of my bluesky prison. Not sure how it works but after a certain amount of time the spam label was removed.
reply
Good to know. I think it'd be better if we can have a clone of twitter (X) which has zaps enabled.

Anytime bitcoin comes up on HN (hackernews) the thread gets filled with "full stack PHP programmers" who hate bitcoin.

Thanks for the heads-up.

From now on, you're our official authority on the matter of alternative forum-based sites.
We'll refer to the trial-and-test period as "Rubification", a positive finding as "Rubified" and a negative finding is to be referred to as "Ruby'd" (As in: Eliminated by 'Ruby).

i just use nostr and sn , but sadly it is very difficult to generate any meaningful engagement. i do like to follow along with the big names in the bitcoin space and see what they're saying etc

I make it a habit to read from news sources or blogs I'm ideologically not aligned with, or sometimes take a look at my wife's twitter feed, in the hope to find something that will make me rethink, or even contribute to some of my convictions, but it's a completely different world to me. We're so fundamentally different in thinking it seems.
I'm def not surprised by your experience.

Nah seriously I'm kind of disappointed but also not. Like, what is wrong with people's brains?
Thanks for taking a beating on our behalf, fighting the good fight etc

The guy that said Bitcoin was fascist and anti-human. I was just shocked. I replied "how can an open, uncensorable protocol, available to anyone in the world be fascist and anti-human. He went on to tell me it has been corrupted like the internet. Ok pal.
reply
It's good to know what the left believes, and what probably most people believe due to MSM anti-Bitcoin propaganda.
It explains why it's so hard to orange-pill the average person: they're not simply disinterested, but actively prejudiced.

Ugh.
Yeah, again. Braincells.
Is it the vegetarian diet these schmucks follow? Is it the soy? The seed oil? The vaxx?
I am at a loss to account for stupidity :/

I was under the impression that bluesky was supposed to be Blockchain based...
Now, firstly I recognise that Blockchain ≠ Bitcoin. However, most interactions I've had with people who understand Blockchain are pretty pro bitcoin. It seems odd to me that (if I'm right in bluesky being built on Blockchain) that bitcoin reception would be so poor. Or do people just use stuff without any real understanding of what it is/does.
Likely the latter as your experience suggests.
reply
It's ATProtocol not blockchain. It is supposed to be decentralized or at least more decentralized.
I don't think decentralization enthusiast are using it. Just people who are trying to escape twitter because it is not too "right wing".
reply
I see! Got my wires crossed there.
I think you hit the nail on the head, it's people trying to escape twitter not decentralisation enthusiasts yet.
reply
Well, nothing bad I trying new frontiers, the environment is something else.

labelled as spam what a classic!
Even as we're about to hit 1 sat = 1 sat the haters can't stop.
I appreciate how hard it was for you not to troll!

I have now been let out of my BlueSky prison but I don't know how not to go back. I am not sure rehabilitation worked.

well now you can go back and troll all you want and see if you can get banned haha

I joined it back when it first when public and it was so dead… now it just seems to be the echo chamber of the Left.
What I find hilarious though is how politicians and all these other big names continue to only post on X even though they hate it and talk up BlueSky
reply
I wonder if people on BlueSky realize that to really succeed, it does need to diversify (same issue with Nostr, but that's a separate situation). When Twitter "worked" ten years ago, it wasn't just lefties or righties or bitcoiners or shitcoiners or punk rockers or classical music fans or sports fans. It was all of those. Each community was able to exist, and folks could focus on the ones they cared about. Having only one area of interest isn't sustainable.

Interesting point although I'd say it took all this time for tribal language and customs to develop. Similar to how you can never start a proper Bitcoin today, you can't start a culturally neutral online community today.

Haha! You triggered the blob's immune system and it spat you out.

BlueSky moderation. I tried to see if there was a way to appeal but couldn't figure it out.

Its a same shit as twitter, but with different name.
Only SN is great.
