Desalination makes no sense to me. When I was at uni they showed us how raw sewage takes less energy to purify than raw sea water. So I don't see why we don't instead focus on wastewater.

The issue with using sewage is a quantity thing. The supply doesn’t meet demand. The 30 million gallons this facility is going to produce the water can be used for many different things. Not every drop makes it to the sewage system.
Using wastewater can be used but it can’t be a dependable source. For example like fighting a fire.
