Howdy stackers,
I recently opened a github issue for a new type of post called a Series and I'm looking for some feedback from stackers.
Almost every day, it seems like there's a new series created by the stackers, this will only grow. A new type of post could be used to organize these recurring kinds of posts, and make them individually subscribable. This could help writers manage their recurring content on SN, and help readers streamline their notifications, and probably their bookmarks as well.

brainstorming thoughts

  • You'd manage your series on your profile page
  • With each series comes a template to work from
  • If you're in the middle of one, you can add the previous episodes, etc.
  • If you've already completed one, you can organize it and post the link to the completed series.
  • Icon for series post
  • Public series is where it gets more interesting with a much wider scope.
    • Parent's Corner, Ask SN, SN Brainstorm: these could be "public series" where multiple stackers post in the series, and in varying territories.
  • A public series, depending on the criteria to start one, becomes like a mini-territory that can cross between the territories, if that makes sense.
    • A writer of "Parent's Corner" would have their audience, regardless of the territory they've posted in.
    • I think public series serve a different enough purpose from sub-territories, and can compliment each other well.
    • The founder of a public series could limit who can post and where. Then of course, how much % do they make? What's the cost to start/maintain a series? etc..
  • I guess if SN is a town, and the land is divided into territories, series are like magazines or journals that we can all create and pass around between the territories.

?'s

  • Is there a better word for this than "series"?
  • Should private and public series both have a cost? Should it be the same?
  • Maybe each stacker gets a series for free, and any subsequent cost sats?
  • Should "public series" be different in scope? Axed entirely?
  • Is this idea completely stupid?
Let me know your thoughts and feedback on if/how "Series" post type should be implemented!
I like this a lot (no surprise, since I probably have like a dozen series going).
I imagine the creator would either select specific stackers who can post in the series or leave it open to anyone, as well as making a similar choice about where it can be posted. We'd want the creator to be able to adjust those choices indefinitely.
The advantage of the series post type for the author would be inheriting an audience and perhaps working off of a template (plus the joy of contributing to something greater than oneself).
The advantage for readers would be less notification clutter and more tailored content subscriptions, as well as being able to easily find other entries in the series. I'm thinking there could be "Previous Entry", "Next Entry", and "Full Series" links at the bottom of each series post.
I don't think there would need to be anything different about fees or zap shares, though. These would essentially be independent posts as far as SN is concerned, with the exception of being able to see the whole series on a search/sort page.
Another step towards evergreen-ness, @elvismercury (you absentee son of a bitch).

That'd be nice.
It's possible this issue was opened because of too many Mises.org articles in my notifications. hahah!

Totally fair.

I agree.

I've only been here a few days and have already seen quite a few posts that could have benefitted from this format. I would love to see something like this be implemented, especially if it made it easy to back and find earlier posts in a series.

Welcome! Thank you for the feedback.

I think just splitting the items tab into posts and comments.
Would make it easier to browse a persons profile.
Then for the series, just make a dedicated user.

I love the idea but maybe for now only private series to start with...?
This also makes me think that it'd good to have statuses (draft, published)
reply
I'd love to be able to save drafts of posts.
reply
This would be quite fitting for my current set of [Daily Puzzle] series...
reply
Is an interesting idea. I think nothing can go wrong with this. Yes it could bring on some other type of posts.
reply
Thanks, it's almost like the middle ground between a new post type and a new territory type.

We'll have to vote on the number of s's in series's's ;)
reply
Yeah or change the word, seriesly got stick of hearing it in my head while writing this.
reply
I see what you did there ;)

Gazette, almanac, bulletin, chronicle, courier,...

This will be great to somehow group all the guide have written across territories under the "Let's attach SN to..." series
reply
Yup, I'd zap and subscribe to that series.

Good idea! We can also have the name like sitcom, soap, string?
reply
In my opinion, this feature should be marked as a top priority!
reply
This is a fabulous idea! I agree to whatever @undisciplined wisely marked here.
It would be great fun if it comes up with an attached cost. Say, a Stacker wants to create a series of 30 episodes, it must be purchased beforehand, the territory owner should have the right to set fees differently for series. I'm not saying the fees should be higher than the other types. It can be whatever they like.
reply
Yeah I think a cost is necessary given the amount of options and functionality involved. There's some game theory to figure out there.
It seems like it should be cheaper than a territory, but I don't know nothing.

Every social media has problem. The only one that solved this well is Youtube with playlists. Taking advantage of the whole backcatalog 📚
Other social medias try to solve this with albums, pinboards, threads, maybe newsletters, tags... None are as good as Youtube playlists
Stacker News in general has an amazing backcatalog that's hard to explore atm.

It's also not incentivized as much as finding good new content yet, in the daily rewards at least.

Love this idea. There are so many series -- from the serialized novels to the weekly wraps in ~booksandarticles to the daily posts in ~music -- that being able to easily go back through them without having to run a search would be great.

Doesn’t sound bad at all

Yes love this idea.

Such great idea! It could make sub-territories obsolete
reply
If it makes sub-territories obsolete, I would likely vote against it.
My current territory is built with this future functionality in mind...
reply
There's probably some crossovers where a sub-territory would work in place of the series. E.g., [Movie Reviews] as a sub-territory where the topic won't stray from the territory.
But something like [ASK SN], [Parent's Corner] might be posted in different territories. Or someone has a personal series and they want to jump from topic to topic in their posts.
reply
I don't see series as something that makes sub-territories obsolete, at all. Someday, there will likely be a ~parenting territory or sub-territory and Parent Corner would just be a series that mostly lives there, but the series has a more restricted scope than a whole territory would.

Maybe you are right, either if the function of posting in multiple territories will be released, I still think it is a great feature! In the ~AGORA we'd use it for the weekly series and other recurring post

This cowboy gets it.
