I know ON CHAIN is the base layer and for using LN you need to open the channel with an onchain txt.
But, teaching to non technical students or precoiners, sometimes works better starting demonstrating the power of Bitcoin with a lightning transaction as an example.
What do you think?, which approach do you use more?
IMO, none of these methods are wrong, each one works for a specific audience.
If you start straight into LN, you will have half-students that will always have to go back asking about x and y for onchain.
A power user for LN is the one that knows well at least the basics for onchain. Yes, is a longer way to start with onchain education, but is much easier later when they get into much sophisticated LN aspects.
Remember: LN payments are just "not-yet broadcasted" onchain transactions.

Start from the core principles of why Bitcoin is better money.

I think we should start with education about money, the history of money, the gold standard, the fiat standard, etc. Once someone understands why Bitcoin is the most superior form of money the world has ever seen, it will be easy for them to learn how to use it

  1. The history of cash...
  2. Why Bitcoin... (Wtf happened 1979)
  3. How Bitcoin works (users, nodes, miners - mempool.space)...
  4. seedsigner & specter diy with seedsticks
This in short terms...
I dont think it makes sense to start with second layers. You first need to know what bitcoin is... If you start with something like WOS, its not (realy) your bitcoin. If you start with Phoenix, they wont get it...
Also I say: Dont buy bitcoin, study bitcoin 100 hours, because then you will buy bitcoin anyway with the little difference how to handle it! ;-p

I have always started onchain but if I was starting fresh today with a brand new person I would probably start with ln

Both - but also neither!
General concepts about money fist. Then BTC L1... then L2 to practice - but that's level 2 theory. L1 is the main course.

The person who is not teaching started exactly talking about how harmful Fiat money is and demonstrating with various arguments how the government literally steals or puts its hand in our pockets with inflation rampant every day! and how saving in dollars or another currency makes no sense... and there, seeing our interest, he talked to us about things at the same time... first about Onchain, the first layer and then Lithing... the truth is that this way it was easier for me to understand it...

I'm starting from upcoming hyperinflation then move to price of food in local markets and eventually come to Bitcoin. If people answer me: "I don't care" or "I'm interested", - I finished and propose to get back to this conversation later
If people people ready to listen I start as myth buster burn muths. When they wander how to handle slow transactions, LN comes to the scene

Just posted this #697470 . I am just trying that my daughter becomes familiar with bitcoin and I think it may be easier to start with LN. Slowly.

In my opinion, if you start from the end, it will be much more difficult.
The actrative of LN lies on on-chain as its a solution to scale up..
Teach someone how to drive if the car has no wheels is kind of weird rigth?
To see an LN transaction without understanding the base, its way less impacting.

I guess LN would be better for a precoiner without telling him about the node. Node can be told when gets used to. Before that, we should tell how to buy Bitcoin by P2P and how to store them.
