This is a follow up on yesterday's silly What kind of Stacker are you? post.
I realized I could simplify it to two very simple metrics based on zaps and items, which led to me creating a graphical way to display how we behave on Stacker News.
How to place yourself on the graph?
  • Left/Right: divide the larger of your spending/stacking rank by the smaller, then move that many spaces left or right.
  • Up/Down: divide the larger of your posts/comments rand by the smaller, then move that many spaces up or down.
Example:
  • 19/3 (my spending rank/my stacking rank) = 6 1/3 right.
  • 10/5 (my posts rank/my comments rank) = 2 down.
From what I saw in yesterday's comments, most of us are miserly trolls (which doesn't actually make numerical sense). I suspect that's mostly selection bias.
I missed your post yesterday so this was perfect!
Just a reckless zapper.

🤠 nice!
reply
Nice graphical addition.
reply
Yes!
I looked into where some stackers would land and I noticed that you're one of the few on the reckless side.

Yeah I started off on SN by doing giveaways after learning about lightning. It was easy to see what kind of developer @k00b was based on his interactions and that made me want to continue supporting and using the site. Fast forward, now I own territory in these here parts.
SN or bust.

This is great. This should be added to the leaderboard page.
reply
That would be awesome!
There should also be an arrow indicating where Darth is.
reply
Hahaha, not sure how to add my avatar!

Can you add me as well? I'll âš¡!
Thanks for your help adding me !
reply
This is exactly what I was hoping to see at some point.
reply
I didn't understand it but I tried. Can you please check if it's correct?
My stacking rank is 29 and spending is 104 My postrank is 55 and comment rank is 9
reply
You nailed it! I think that's sort of where @grayruby is.
reply
He can't be there his spending and stacking is quite equal.
reply
I think he's slightly southwest of you.
reply
I think I also belong in the yellow quadrant.
reply
I think you might be off the chart, like Darth. #682455
reply
Hey, I am not that much of a troll.
reply
if stacking / spending (45/45) = 1 and comments /post (37/33) = 1.12
How would this result represent in the table?
reply
I may not have thought this through.
My formula should be shifted one unit towards the axis. You should be dead center (slightly below actually, I guess).
reply
Haha it’s ok . I was just trying to figure out. I am happy to be right in the middle.

That’s the secret

I think you moved yourself slightly closer to the median line between spammer and troll. I demand a recount.
And I just proved why I am by my lonesome way down in the southeastern hemisphere as a miserly troll.
reply
You should see how far down in that corner Darth is.

Based Darth is based.

This would probably match Michael Malice's chart if he was on SN.
reply
Michael might be less miserly.
reply
Haha. Factually correct.
reply
I had a couple mins to spare haha
reply
LOL you really spend time to calculate my score, wow thanks man. I always like to be "off all charts"...
reply
I knew it'd make a funny picture 😂
reply
that picture could be good for the meme contest and the fun fact contest in the same time LOL
I am quite close to 21 000 items on SN
reply
Feature not a bug. Somebody has to keep the crypto scammers at bay.
reply
which doesn't actually make numerical sense
How do you mean?
reply
These are rankings, so there must be people who rank higher in spending than stacking to offset all of us who are the opposite. Same for commenting vs posting.
reply
Ok. Just checked, my two ratios are 27/60 and 63/40.
How does the first ratio translate into the graph, to go left, I have to use 60/27 instead?
EDIT: Ok, missed this part in the explanation:
divide the larger [...] by the smaller,
reply
I slightly messed up the instruction. You have to also slide one space towards the axes, because if you have the same rank in both things that should be a 0 rather than a 1.
reply
Can you tell me where can I find these ranks?
reply
On the front page, choose "top". Then, use the drop down menus to sort by "Stackers" "forever".
reply
Oh, got it, thanks, seems I need to do it from the laptop
