Hello Stackers!
It's Thursday so that means it's Throwback Thursday Time!
Throwback Thursday is changing, (or rather, I'm trialing something out).
I'm going to give you a bunch of clues and I want you to guess the year and comment a song from that year. Highest ranked correct answer (by zaprank) gets the bounty.
šŸšØA guess without a correct song doesn't win, both your guess and the song must be from the correct year.šŸšØ Here we go!
  • Comet Hale-Bopp: This comet passed by Earth and was one of the most observed comets of the 20th century.
  • Korean Air Flight 801 crash: This flight crashed on Guam during heavy rain, killing 229 people.
  • Death of Princess Diana: Diana, Princess of Wales died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. She was 36 years old.
  • Transfer of Hong Kong: The United Kingdom handed over Hong Kong to China, ending the colony's status as the largest remaining British colony.
  • Super Bowl XXXI: The Green Bay Packers won the NFL Championship, defeating the New England Patriots 35ā€“21.
  • Titanic, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and Men in Black were the three biggest films of the year.
What do you remember from this year?
Reward will cut off at the time I post the feel good Friday thread.

Wow! Thank you so much.

The best of all times? At least the best of 1997.
reply
This song. Ooooooffff, it's just šŸ¤ŒšŸ¤Œ
šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ One of my all time favourites, it's such a beautiful song.
Her voice is so powerful. Definitely up there as one of the best of that year, but we can't discount artists like Celine Dion, or Sir Elton. We've had some šŸ”„ submissions. 97 was a great year. This might be my favourite though.
reply
Celine and Sir Elton are definitely great singers but I like her more. This has been my go to song for years.
reply
I don't blame you. It's going to be very tough to beat. Looking over all these submissions from today, 97 was a great year for music, foo fighters aswell, all saints, Leann rimes, Biggie, the verve, daft punk. Some absolutely massive hits.
reply
Great Deftones track.
Here is a throwback for you.
@siggy47 do you know this track or was it only popular in Canada?
reply
Wow! Yes I remember that. It was a big hit, but I have not thought of that song in years. I didn't recognize it until the chorus. What year did that come out?
reply
Song was released in 1971. They are a Canadian band, and were very popular in Canada, but I wasn't sure if they had gained any notoriety in the US. A bit before my time but it still got a lot of play on Canadian radio as I was growing up.
reply
I was a kid, but I remember it well, which means it was a big hit. A lot of songs from that era still get played a lot, but not this one.
reply
This still gets played in Canada. We have Canadian content rules for radio broadcasters. 35% of content must be Canadian in some way.
reply
Isn't All Canadian content is now either American or Punjabi?
reply
The content just has to have a Canadian involved. So you could have a song that was released by an American band but a Canadian was a producer or sound engineer or one of the song writers then it is also considered Canadian content.
reply
Come on! Are you messing with us?
reply
reply
That is one fine hat.
reply
Not heard this before, and it is the wrong year so you won't be able to qualify for the bounty, but the song is great.
reply
Yeah, I didn't read the rules again. I just shared a throwback track. I will try to remember to follow the new rules next week but no promises.
reply
reply
Massive track, but not the right year.
reply
1982's best one! It's for both @siggy and @grayruby
reply
Classic track
reply
Hah! šŸ˜† I forgot to type 47 of @siggy47
reply
One day Siggy will tell us the significance of 47. One day.
reply
Yes, I also hope so, One day. Siggy must have been enough! Why he put that 47 is another mystry about him.
reply
I just assumed there had to be at least 46 other Siggys
reply
Now someone is going to create accounts for Siggy's 1-46.
reply
I searched it and the answer I got definitely suggests there must be 1000s of siggys at least.
The name Siggy is a girl's name meaning "victory; violet". Siggy can be a short form of any name that starts with Sig-. Most Sig- names have Germanic origins, like the Scandinavian names Signe and Sigrid. In this context, Siggy means "victory".
reply
Classic song, but not the correct year this time round.
reply
Sorry my bad. I didn't go through the complete post.

I'm trialing a little competition with the throwback idea. See if we can make a small game for people. I doubt anyone's going to start googling answers for the sake of 1ksats. So it's mostly for fun, but if someone wants to post a track from a different year and not compete then I've got no problem with that either. The whole point is we Talk Music. Share Tracks. Zap Sats. In whatever capacity the users of the space want. I liked the song you posted by the way, toto are great.
reply
That's surely a fantastic idea!

This is the slogan now for ~Music. Like it!
reply
@grayruby came up with that slogan when the territory formed, so I can't take all the credit, but it is the ~Music Territory motto for sure.
reply
I thought I just added something to what you already had. I don't recall.
reply
I had a crappy logo hastily put together in MS Paint. You did a much better one, with the slogan and I liked it enough to keep it.
1997... you actually also included it in the hints :) R.I.P. Biggie
reply
I can't believe I did that, that was a copy/paste error. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ Ah well, still some fun songs to listen to. RIP Biggie. šŸ«” Huge song.

reply
Wasn't expecting to hear a jazz track submitted to this. Very good.
reply
Thanks! Gotta throw some curveballs every once in a while.
reply
This is what I love about this space. So many different genres represented in these posts and the dailies. Gives me loads to listen to.
reply
Think you gave it away with the third hint lol.
reply
Oh no!!! šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ I forgot to edit that bit out šŸ¤£šŸ¤£
Ah well, the winner is based on which tracks the users vote for, so hopefully the fun part of enjoying the tracks from that year is still there.
reply
1997 Never Ever by All Saints.
reply
Wow! This is a real throwback! Great submission, and yes the year was '97 the height of britpop era.
reply
The Year is 1997.
