I'm trying to expand my communication tools, and Simplex is one of the tools that is recommended for privacy. (Also would love to hear more about others, but Simplex seems to be the one people talk about most).

But I don't think it's very straightforward to use. Does anyone know of groups that I could join, just to chat with people and learn about it?

Or are there other communication tools I should be looking at?

There's a stacker.news group. See down the bottom.

I have only used it a couple of times. Would love more friends to join

Cool! And great suggestion. I didn’t know about it.

reply

Same. I think it must be relatively new.

I don't get it, its not much different than ephemeral nostr keys and trusting the relay not to leak metadata... but with none of the network effect and seemingly less practical to distribute the relays

It's really sad how regularly "privacy" apps spread through virtue signaling, not substance

reply

Hmm...what would you suggest as a Simplex-like tool?

Also...isn't leaking the metadata a big deal? With Simplex it isn't possible to leak the metadata (that's my understanding).

reply

What constitutes a simplex like tool? I use Telegram, I also have 0 expectations of privacy because it's on someone else's server

Metadata is, if you're going to run your own relay then there's no advantage vs nostr... otherwise you're just trading one metadata aggregator for another

reply

you're trolling right?

simplex is by far the easiest, especially when you consider there is no phone number (read: gps tracker) to provision

for groups, check this out: https://github.com/simplex-chat/simplex-chat?tab=readme-ov-file#join-user-groups

Cool! Checking it out. (BTW if anyone is looking for it, it's under "chat" in the footer of every page)
