Bisq v2.1.0: Support Lightning Network as Additional Bitcoin Settlement Method
The latest Bisq 2 release, v2.1.0, brings support for the Lightning Network as an additional Bitcoin settlement method, a QR code scanner, upgraded chats, improved Tor startup, and more.
I particularly like that this is the third darknet market (or DNM) I know of to add LN support, after robosats (http://robodexarjwtfryec556cjdz3dfa7u47saek6lkftnkgshvgg2kcumqd.onion/) and shopstr (http://iftfujvg3tv6v5fcilgswbkkntdfd7bphyuth6zfyghqrwj3kowxwbad.onion/)
Bisq is one of the older DNMs in existence, having begun operations in April 2016. Their decision to integrate lightning is particularly cool to me because of my recent arguments with monero people about lightning privacy. Some of them say that lightning has worse privacy than monero, relying on the following argument for support: DNMs, where privacy really counts, don't use lightning, and mostly rely on monero rather than bitcoin. But it's actually not true that DNMs don't use lightning (some do, as linked above) and it looks like LN support is beginning to gain momentum. And I, for one, am here for it!

Have you already claimed John Foss 115 XMR bounty for the simple challenge of providing 2 out of 3 details (sender, receiver, amount) from him and another's Monero transaction?
reply
No, I ran it through XaMinR (my monero tracing tool) and did not get 2 out of the 3
reply
It's called a dex or p2p exchange and it's important to use language like that. Sure you can use tor to access it, but you don't need to with most dex's (afaik).
To unnecessarily use the word 'dark' to describe something, is asking for the attention of burocrats to come in with more stupid laws and scare away some potential users as well.
reply
It's called a dex or p2p exchange and it's important to use language like that
Robosats and bisq are also called markets:
In order to fully stop the p2p market of RoboSats, every single instance must be stopped. source
Every month (approximately), this bitcoin is used to buy BSQ on the market and burn it. source -- see also the footer on every page of bisq.network, where they describe themselves as a market: "Market Data API"
Both of these markets are only available on the darknet, so they can't be anything other than DNMs.
And I think your language is counterproductive. By restricting the definition of "dark" only to describe illegal things, you scare legitimate users away and invite regulation. There is absolutely no shame in buying or selling goods and services on tor. It's a perfectly normal thing that normal people do to preserve their privacy.
reply
I am not defining dark, it's about what people think when they hear the word. And what would 100 people answer if you ask them eg what the 'dark' side of the internet means?
Decentralised Exchange completely covers it. First words on bisq website: Exchange, Decentralised. Almost everywhere it is described as such or p2p exchange.
We have no disagreement about using tor being ethical, my point was about using smart language. Using 'dark' makes a totally unnecessary association with illegal things. This is the reason darkcoin changed their name, probably the only good decision they ever made.
reply
Lightning layer on top of these services makes so much sense. It is worth a trial to see how well it performs.
reply
Yes, I am looking forward to trying it as well
I used to use bisq all the time, but that was rewards ago
Will be neat to see the new version
reply
years* not rewards

Gotta!

it's a different app. not a new version

darknet market? what are you talking about? robosats and bisq are exchanges and not offering any kind of products. why are you misleading people here? bisq 2 was released long time ago btw. still all the dnm are using monero. facts.
reply
Robosats and Bisq are 'markets'... in that they are buying and selling capital. They are capital markets.
reply
Bisq and robosats are DNMs because they are marketplaces on the darknet. They compete directly with other DNMs on products such as cash parcels, gift cards, and currency swaps.
reply
as I said this is misleading. your point is that lightning transactions were implemented for privacy. but bitcoin on-chain transactions on bisq were available all the time. were is the point? bisq and robosats are exchanges run over tor where you can exchange fiat (bank transfer, vouchers) to bitcoin. the classic darknet markets are selling goods for monero, rarely bitcoin (lack of privacy). they are not exchanging fiat to bitcoin. that's a huge difference.
reply
lightning transactions were implemented for privacy
I don't think that is why bisq implemented it, I think it is a side effect
the classic darknet markets are selling goods for monero
Many of the same goods sold on other DNMs are also sold on bisq and robosats. Namely, gift cards and cash parcels. The most popular item on silk road 2.0 was Tesco vouchers, not drugs
they are not exchanging fiat to bitcoin
Cash parcels are among the most common things I see on DNMs and that is a form of converting fiat to bitcoin and vice versa
Offers to do crypto swaps are also super common on DNMs
reply
Darknet markets aren't just for illegal shit on Tor, you acid-soaked fool.
The buying and selling of cash can be an activity performed on platforms which help you maintain your financial privacy. Two of these, Bisq and RoboSats, can be considered darknet markets too.
reply
That's exactly what people mean when they say "Darknet Markets". That's the common understanding.
Sure they can use it your way if they want to confuse whoever they're talking to, but colloquially no one ever refers to DEXs over tor as Darknet Markets...

Are banks DNM because the simple fact transactions are private?
reply
Bank transactions are private?
reply
(1) banks are not marketplaces -- you cannot list goods or services for sale at a bank
(2) I'm not aware of any banks who host hidden tor services or similar to give users access to them
reply
Ok, just to confirm, this is still just the normal protocol, but where the buyer paying on-chain BTC then receives via LN ?
i.e., not the planned Bisq Lightning feature?
Bisq Lightning: LN BTC <-> Fiat (chain of multiple protocols: Liquid Submarine Swaps, Liquid Multisig)
reply
The new feature is where User A pays fiat or non-btc crypto to User B and User B sends bitcoin over LN to User A
I don't know what the "chain of multiple protocols" thing is, it sounds like a complicated way to bring multisig to lightning "sort of" so that bisq can provide their typical escrow feature

Tried Bisq2 and hate it. Order book as message blobs is hard to use, system fonts are small and bleak, not configurable, not compatible with the Android notification app. For lightning p2p I go to https://t.me/p2plightning
reply
I tried it too, I feel similarly
Lots of work to do

Listen folks, @supertestnet hit the nail right on the head. Bisq's recent decision to support the Lightning Network is a game changer. You've got these Monero supporters out there constantly claiming that Lightning's privacy ain't up to par. Frankly, that's FAKE NEWS. Cryptocurrency is all about setting trends, folks. Echoing @supertestnet here, Lightning Network is gaining momentum, it's a strong force. And I'm telling ya, Bisq integrating it? A big, BIG move. They're a pioneer in the game, been around since 2016. This isn't their first rodeo. So if they believe in Lightning, you better believe it's got potential! And it's the THIRD DNM to use it, LIGHTNING IS WINNING. It's gonna be YUGE. Time to get on the Lightning train, folks, or get left behind!

Listen here, @032d74705c, you can't just dismiss Lightning like that. Years ago, huh? You think it's all so simple. It's always easy to be a Monday morning quarterback, to look back and say 'it should've been done years ago'. Let me tell you something, innovation takes time. You gotta appreciate that. And it's not just about 'exchanging fiat to Lightning' - it's about progress, privacy, efficiency! It's about excellence in crypto world. And that's what Bisq is doing with the Lightning Network. So wake up to the future, buddy! Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, folks! Lightning train is leaving the station, all aboard or get left behind! #LightningNetwork #CryptoFuture
