I would like to introduce to all LN node runners, especially the public routing ones a new form of finding the best LN channels peers for your public nodes: The Telegram Bot Channel Recommender.
The bot was created by Kevin (LL developer) and is running in a simple way over Telegram.
For the moment there's a generic fee of 1 sat to query the recommendations and possible that in the future will be incremental, based on the number of queries a user will do with the bot. You have to understand that the bot is doing like 60000 combination queries to find your best peers and is using a lot of computation and resources, so the actual fee is quite symbolic.

Usage:

  1. Using Telegram https://t.me/chanrecommender_bot just click on /start
  2. Input your node pubkey
  3. Input the min/max channel size (use sats as unit, like 5000000 as 5 million sats)
  4. You will be prompted to pay a LN invoice of 1 sat
  5. It will take up to 5 min to find the best result, so be patient. It will show up 3 of the most important aspects to connect to a peer, with their score, based on the size of the channel:
  • Top 5 Improvements in Hubness
  • Top 5 Improvements in Hopness
  • Top 5 Improvements in Centrality

REMINDER:

This bot will recommend ONLY public routing peers! Do not use it for your private LN nodes.
Happy Lightning and good sail routing !

If you need help on getting faster results, i'd ve happy to help! Mine (www.lnshortcut.ovh) used to take 30+ secondes to give recommandations, and now does yet more things in less that 1 second. Optimizing it was the most fun part!

cool, interesting too!

@DarthCoin where should i start learning about the fundamentals of networks, if i want to become Uncle Jim later? i started with Saylor academy a while ago, but it was not very fun...

fundamentals of networks
what do you mean by this? Is quite a general term.

how computers connect, relays, IP's, DNS, etc. something easily digestible for newbie. u were working in IT so it's obviously very basic for u.
as u said, people jump straight into running routing nodes without having any idea how internet works, so i want to avoid that mistake.

Yes, I have an IT background with 20 years of experience in networking and servers. But for running a LN node you need at least a basic knowledge about how these things work, you don't have to take a degree of science in networking.
Just learn, plenty of tutorials on internet about this stuff.

This explains so much. Why you can be cranky for one.
reply
Working in IT is often a thankless job. You get very little attention when things work which is most of the time. In the 0.1% of the time they don't you get angry ungrateful people.
Be kind to your IT people.

lol
it's a tough job especially 20 years

Dealing with a lot of BS and dumb-people
Very cool. I have always used either LNDg recommendations or sparkseer. space
reply
I think this bot come in response of sparkseer.space that before was lnnodeinsight.com, having similar results.

Yes. I started with lndinsights. I really liked playing around with the different peer combinations and getting predictions.
reply
Yeah they had also nice graphs, good tool.
Anyways, I tested this bot a bit and seems to give nice recommendations and you can choose from 5 results or combine them, based on the score. Now with these low fees is good to recycle and change the paths a bit, if you run a public routing node.

This is great. Thanks Darth

It's good that someone can make improvements in areas like this

DonaldTrumped: Folks, we have DarthCoin over here talking about this Telegram Bot Channel Recommender thing for LN node runners – whatever that means. This bot, invented by some guy Kevin, I'm told he's an LL developer – big deal.
So, here's the thing. The bot queries 60000 combinations – absolutely astronomical numbers. You’re telling me it’s using a ton of resources and this Kevin guy wants to charge us a fee? One Sat! Have we not given enough to tech already? This is just an excuse for not adequately optimising the product. Terrible!
And what's this about waiting up to 5 minutes to find results? In the time it takes for this bot to give you results, I could have negotiated a new trade deal – time's money folks! It's all about efficiency and this bot is anything but that.
Only public routing peers are recommended by this thing. What about private LN nodes? Are we ignoring them? Aren't they a part of our community too? It's all about inclusion, folks. This bot seems to have forgotten that.
Let's be clear. This bot is nothing more than another way to extract money and time from hard-workers and the business community! They suggest setting sail, but with this guide, I fear you’d drift off course!
