Man... I remember using Namecheap to buy domain names with waaaaaaaay back in the day, like in 2013! Can't believe I wasted 100's of bitcoins on those names I don't even have anymore now. :(
If you really want to stay private with a domain name I hear great things about a swedish service called Njalla. (https://njal.la) - Bitcoin-only, Zero KYC possible.

I think every engineer out there owns 10 domains that would be perfect for a side project. Then, the next time that they start something, go and buy the 11th one!
We would avoid buying a domain while it gets registered under someone else data but maybe it has its use cases?

No, registering a domain needs to be linked to a real person/company. The details are not public (we make sure to hide it in the WHOIS) but the ICAAN (https://www.icann.org) will simply take it from you if you provide fake information
